Green Glue VS Sound Damp2 from Kinetics

4589 Views 18 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Cool711
I see GG plastered every where on the this forum. Sales rep at Kinetics clams to offer a better products. Does anyone here have any experience with Sound Damp2? Their data sheet shows 1 STC improvement over GG.

I have used both extensively.

While the GG is very effective it's a huge mess and a PITA.

I would go with Kinetics from the shear fact of ease of installation.

And it does perform as advertised.
I do like the fact that it can be installed using a paint roller. No cleaning the speed loader gun and no small tubes. If your continuing another day just grab another roller.
I never clean the speed loaders. I just toss it in a bucket of water between sheets and overnight, when the job is done, throw it away. Rolling does have a certain appeal. how does the cost compare?

I would not recomend using a paint roller as this defeats the effectiveness namely that we want uneven coverage to create air gaps.

Follow the instructions of a random but semi even coverage using a 3/8 bead and two tubes per sheet.

Those instructions are for a different product then we are discussing. The linked mfgr installation instructions for Sound Damp2 recommends a short nap roller. Probably a method closer in coverage and thickness to factory made Quiet Rock.

trans_lux, stop confusing me.
I have used asc walldamp back in the 90's on my first theater room.

Kinetics Sound Damp 2 seems harder to find and is probably more expensive so, I'll just stick to GG when the time comes...maybe they'll have a GG2 by then
.

Jeff, that is a good tip for the GG speed loader, thanks.

Tom

Draw up and expel a couple loads of water, then draw up a tube full of water and leave in the bucket for breaks or overnight. Change your water everyday while in use and if you are going to leave it sit for several days run a couple tubes of water every day you are there working on something else.

That is the best tip I've heard in a long time! I'm getting sick of cleaning that darn speed loader (and I've only had to clean it once).
For what its worth, the product data on Kinetics web page appears to show substantially (10dB) better performance for GG at low frequencies. STC in general is not a useful measurement for Home Theater.
Did you notice that they only post the results for 1/2 inch drywall, something you should forget about since today 1/2 is all lightweight. Also the drywall is firmly attached to the studs.
Shouldn't two different thicknesses of drywall be used?

That was a long time ago before the visco elastic dampers. Now everyone uses two layers of 5/8".

Did anyone find any price comparisons?

I tried a search yesterday and all the sound proofing companies had GG. I couldn't find sound damp 2 my search only gave me Kinetics website.
I recall getting advice from maybe kinetics that different thicknesses are ideal as the provide absorption of different frequencies.
Kinetics may prefer that - though given the explanation I got from Ted White last year in my build thread, the physics doesn't back them up: use as much mass as you can. Here's the link to the conversation: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1372262/the-once-and-future-theater/360#post_23075599
