green line on the right side of nbc and abc...why?

522 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  imajazz
i'm getting two anomalies with nbc hd and abc hd channels. for hd programming, i'm getting either a green line on the right side of the tv (for hd material) or cloudy white line on the top of the screen (although the white line is typically for sd material).

any ideas why this is? i'm not sure what the terminology is for these issues, which is why i described it. thanks.

Your TV is underscanning, which allows the VBI (with SD) at the top to show. This may also be the cause with the right side green line.
is there something i can do to fix this underscanning problem? i have a sony 60" xbr grand wega rear projection lcd tv.

maybe i can go into the service menu to tweak the settings?

I believe the green line seen in HD is an artifact of certain encoder/decoder combinations in the Network to Station path. It should not be there, but as noted, a tiny bit of overscan will hide it. Camera operators and directors expect the edges of the screen to not be shown at your home. As some new displays can display all lines and pixels perhaps this will have to change.
how do enable overscan to hide the green line to the right? and hide the cloudy white line at the top?

any advice would be great.
anyone? help a brother out... ;)
You probably have to get access to the 'service menus' and adjust HPOS, VPOS, and/or Hsize and Vsize.
Hey, I noticed a similar thing the other night on NBC during LAX on my NEC pj. Except I saw very faint wide vertical bands of green. I also saw some other color shifts depending on the scene. During darker scenes it was more noticable. It only appeared on NBC. MNF on ABC looked fine.

Dem dang gremlins...
I have the same thing viewing with my Dish 6000, I go into the HD Menu and use the Adjust button to move the image until they dissappear.
thanks! i'll try going into the service menu to tweak the positioning.

It's annoying when a sizeable chunk of the analog VBI survives the A-to-D conversion, and what's even more annoying is how inconsistent the condition is, from show to show, and station to station.

My PC-based tuner (Sasem OnAir) has overscan settings where x number of pixels can be cropped from any edge of the original picture. Cropping 4 pixels on the right seems to solve the "green line" issue for NBC. Cropping 10 pixels from the top rids most SD programs of VBI lines, but I've had to set it as high as 45 for some programs! Otherwise, the analog closed-caption info and anything else in the VBI just flashes away up there. It would be great if the tuner was capable of localizing the overscan settings for each individual video mode on each individual channel, like it does with color/contrast settings.
i completely agree. wish there was a way it could be automatic. i've tweaked some of the settings in the service menu to shift the green line on the right and the fuzzy white stuff up top. looks much better.

but the picture seems a bit less clear. it could be all mental though. might have to revert back and compare the pq.
