What an excellent review. Thank you sir.
Great review Gregg!

So the only trick is to set the hdmi to enhanced and adjust the contrast and brightness accordingly right?

Yes indeed.
My JVC DLA-RS35 review is now posted on-line at the Widescreen Review subscribers website. It's a great product, but I'm not doing a live Q&A session this time.

As usual the review is copyrighted material from Widescreen Review. WSR will stop posting my reviews early if they get reposted. So please don't spoil the opportunity to read the reviews in advance of the print edition.

What's this in reference to?

Gregg in his review mentions that BTB and WTW clip if you set the hdmi to standard or auto.. And that to get around this is to simply set it to enhanced and then you simply adjust the brightness and contrast acordingly...
Great review Gregg! The only part that I am confused is that it reads that only in contrast and depth is better than the RS20, but then when you read through the whole article it seems that the RS35 is sharper... Also, it mentions that the RS35 is better with the motion blur...

Are these improvements only marginal?

Thanks,

Posts directed to Greg Rogers from the other RS-35 thread have been moved here. Since the posts are listed in chronological order, Greg's initial post in this thread appears further down the list than it should.

Sorry about that, Greg...

Anyway, I read the article and it is yet another great review. The only thing that surprises is me is that the difference in sequential contrast is as noticeable as it is. I would have thought that there would be almost no discernible difference between the RS-20 and RS-35 at ANY time, but under certain circumstances the difference turns out to be significant. JVC has another winner on its hands!

Now if we could only get Greg to do a shootout between an RS-25 and RS-35...

Very interesting, thanks! I'll head downstairs and do that right now...
I have only two complains about the RS20, The first one is Motion blur . I don't feel from the article that this has been corrected outside of the FI modes. My Sharp XV-Z20000 was handling motion better than the JVC. I have the Sony VPL-VW85 in trial right now and it's seem to do very well even without the FI or black frame insertion engaged. Why is that? Base on your description that cause motion blur (image retention) Both the Sony and JVC should show the same behavior.

The other problem with the JVC is also during movement. The effect is similar to what I experienced with my old Optoma H77. It may be what you call MIC. Once again the Sony and my old Sharp didn't show any of those artifact. Is this cause by bad processing or is it a flaw with the JVC DILA panels?

I'm not saying that the Sony and my old Sharp are better projectors. They have shortcoming elsewhere. I know you not supposed to answer question. So I would like opinions from everyone that has one.

Hog, record your settings of contrast and brightness first. I have seen nasty white clipping on SD sources in an Oppo 83, but it was fine on HD. The flat panel in the system was on auto color space setting...which Oppo tells me is the cause of that problem. There was no white clipping on your RS35 when calibrated...with a direct from signal generator input, or with the PS3 and Lumagen. You would be wise, though, to do as Greg has suggested to confirm WTW and BTB on your system. You have an Oppo 83, right?

Does this apply to all RS variations (RS1, RS10, etc.) or unique to the RS35??

Following some very early suggestions, I went to 'Enhanced' on the HDMI setting with my RS20, and set Brightness and Contrast accordingly (Br = -5 or -6, and Cst = +5 or 6). One then gets BTB and WTW.

Thanks for the heads up - I'll write everything down and let you know how things turn out! Yes, I do have a BDP-83.

Still loving the PJ btw!!
I am not sure if it has been fixed yet, but HDMI input 2 will reset the HDMI enhanced feature on power cycle, so its best to use HDMI 1.
Wow, great review, Greg. You do make it hard to resist, but I still think I'm going to stand pat with my RS20 at least until next year. I really do want my next pj to have led (or laser) illumination. Would be nice if JVC could produce an RSxx model of this type that had the performance of the RS35, and at a similar price point.

But the 1-chip dlp's, such as the Sim2 Mico50, now look very competitive (if the price came down by a factor of 2 or so). I don't think you have reviewed any Sim2 pj's, but it would be extremely interesting to hear your take on this product if the chance presents itself. They don't have the native CR, but do seem to excel the JVC's in sharpness and ANSI CR; and some of their strongest advocates claim that their CR is as good as the JVC's in practical situations.
I just subscribed to the magazine in print form again. Don't I get access in digital too?

Oh, I see it takes some time to get the activation code. Bummer
