Greyhawk VS Da-Lite Da-mat & High Contract Da-Mat

325 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Stew M
I'm trying to decide between the Greyhawk, the Da-Lite Da-mat and the Da-Lite High Contrast Da-mat.

Screen Size: 45X80

Environment: No direct sun light. However, room will have some defused light come in through cellular (fabric) shades. The room can be made fairly dim, but not dark during the day time.

Projector: VW10HT

Comments:

I've searched a bit in the forums about performance, and it seems clear that people do like the greyhawk. It seems most of the greyhawk reviews are based on a better (read darker) home theater environment than I have. I've read that the Da-Lite Da-Matt is a good all around surface and very flexible. I've seen very few reference to the Da-lite High Contract Da-Mat. It's been noted that it's darker than the greyhawk and may not perform as well. Finally, I'd like to have a solution that will allow me to use the lower light mode on the VW10HT and not have to go high power.

My Questions:

1) Is the greyhawk a good candidate in a room that will not have the best light control during the day time? Or will the presence of light off set the contrast too much and produce a washed out image?

2) Would it be fair to say because the High Contrast Da-Mat is darker than the Greyhawk it will perform worse in lighted conditions?

3) Overall, considering the projector and environment which is the best screen?

I've been reserching the same thing. 10HT projector, 90x54" screen (16:9), room that has diffuse light in the daytime, and want to be able to use the cinema black mode on the 10HT.

Based on feedback I have received on this message board I am ordering a Grayhawk. There were several people who had similar layouts and they all had good results. All of them were using the reduced power setting on the 10HT with no problems, and they all loved it.

Since I don't have the screen yet I don't know if all of this is true, but I was convinced that it is.

kagato and Craig,

Like you I've been reading good things re Greyhawk, but also about retroreflective Dalite screen (see http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

So what is the difference? I'm surmising (and hope more experienced people will explain) that with hi-power screen you can allow more ambient light in, and you get more 3-D and "pop" from images. But with grey screen you get more shadow detail, blacker blacks and richer colors. Both have equal color accuracy and light uniformity.

Is that about right? Does it boil down to personal preference?

I'm using a G-15 in Library/HT with 2 narrow windows at one end, with temporary light-grey paint usually need to wait until night or put up velour curtains to get a color-rich image.

Please explain more ("paint a picture for us") of what the differences are among these good screen choices!
