Recently, I picked up a Linksys 54GS router and a Buffalo WBR2-G54 to act as a bridge. Well, after spending a few hours trying to get them to talk, I found out I need the Sveasoft firmware on the Linksys to get them to work. Not a big deal so far, find out it costs $20 per year. Not a huge deal, however, they only take Paypal accounts, which I avoid like the plague.

So anyhow, I pucker up my cheeks and sign up for an account. Next thing I know, it says I need to pay $1.95 for some extended use thing. Still, not a huge deal, they give you back the $1.95 later. However, now I have to wait several days for a number to show up in my credit card account statement so I can actually buy something with Paypal. Now, I have 2 routers (ok, 1 router and a bridge) that I really can't use since they don't talk without that 3rd party firmware.

Not too much of a happy camper right now. Perhaps I should of went with 2 of the WBR2-G54s instead.

Paypal has a very long list of dissatisfied customers... I have been on it for some time myself. Too bad, I really liked the functionality of their offering, if only they were a company with some integrity.

For what it's worth, I think a few other services are out there, like Yahoo's PayDirect, and I think Citibank has an offering as well. Good luck to ya!

Yes, maybe you should have gone with the Buffalo models instead, but where's the fun in getting something that works out of the box with no tinkering?

This thread is actually the first time I heard of people complaining about PayPal. What exactly were your bad experience(s) with em?

I know I've never had a problem, and they've made my life easier at times, so I can't complain. Plus given they did $12 Billion worth of transactions last year, along with their security safeguards, they must be doing something right...

I really like PayPal. They are very reliable and have given me good service. I use it primarily for eBay transactions - it's main purpose in life. Their good service relieves me of any anxiety in using eBay for buying and selling, especially selling.

Guess you have a point there, just not in the mood to spend time right now tinkering. I was hoping it would work out of the box and I could upgrade the firmware later when I had some spare time...... oh well.

You don't have to pay the $20 just for the record. That's just for access to the forums.

However, I have not paid the $20 and sucks not having the access.

Even with PayPal, there are still risks. My brother recently sold a computer on eBay to a guy who paid him via PayPal. Once the guy received the goods, he reversed the charges and my brother was screwed. Looking at the guy's feedback, my brother realized that he pulled the same thing on a bunch of other people simultaneously.

Citibank's electronic payment service was called C2it. Unfortunately, they discontinued it a while back.

The reality is that you basically have no choice but to accept PayPal if you want to be taken seriously as a seller on eBay. It's not required, but you will severely limit the amount of potential bidders if you don't.

Of course! What else is there on eBay?

The "fines" are an ebay invention when they bought Paypal. They are a "family" oriented venue, LOL.

It's hard for a seller to complain about getting ripped off through Paypal if

1) he doesn't check the buyer's previous feedback.

2) he accept Paypal payment via CC as opposed to bank account funds only and from confirmed addresses only.

I looked into reversing Paypal charges a month ago, it didn't seem to be possible without filing a dispute, which takes 10 days to resolve as arbited by a Paypal security person. That would seem to eliminate any quick turnaround fraud like that you describe.

Can you describe how this was done? I am recently an Ebay seller and I'm very concerned about potential fraud on an $200+ Showstopper that I will list soon.

I had an eBay instance a few months ago that made me a believer in PayPal's services. I purchased an item for $350, but never received it. After severel eMails to the seller and a lot of promises from him, I finally turned it over to PayPal and filed a complaint through them. They were very responsive to me and aggressive towards the seller, and I had a refund in just a couple of days. Apparently they threw enough fear in him to get a response. He probably jeopardized his account with them until the matter was resolved. I'm sure I would have been out of the $350 if it weren't for PayPal. I've always had excellent service from them, and can't imagine eBaying without PayPal!!

The fast response was because Paypal probably seized the $350 till after the matter was settled. If a seller doesn't take CC or Paypal, I usually avoid them.

Why should I run around, get a m.o., print out the auction, mail it and then wait for some guy to ship, etc? With paypal, I pay in 30 seconds and it's shipped the next day.

I had the opposite experience -

I bought something using PayPal funds. Person never shipped, provided phoney tracking #'s to me and PayPal when I filed a claim. PayPal agreed that I should get a refund ("ruled in my favor"), but since the person cleaned out their paypal account, they could not get the funds back for me. I was SOL.
