Guitar amp speaker replacement

570 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Wayne A. Pflughaupt
Hi
I have an old VT guitar amp with a 6 x 10 inches speakers cabinet. One of them is torn up so I have to replace it. But I can't find the exact same speaker anywhere. There are not much info on it: DWJ6 VT80005. The cabinet is a 6G10H from VT (Vibration Technologies from Canada) and is rated 8 Ohms and 140 Watts. I have checked the resistance on the unplugged torn speaker and got 5.0 Ohms. I have also checked the total resistance of the group of 5 speakers together (with the 6th unplugged) and got in the low 20s (was slowly going down). This makes me think that the speakers are 4 Oms each; am I right? Can I simply divide the 140 watts by 6 to get the minimum speaker wattage that I need?
Another question: what frequency response should I look for? Would 35 - 5700 be enough to cover all the sounds and harmonics a guitar can produce?
Thanks

Can’t help you on finding a replacement for the strange speaker (never heard of a 6” x 10” speaker), but 35-5700 Hz is fine for a guitar.

Not a 6" x 10" speaker!

Thanks for replying.
However, I am not talking about the speaker when I say «6 x 10 inches speaker cabinet». It's about the cabinet which has 6 speakers of 10" and one of them is torn.
Should be easier now!
If the speaker is simply "torn", it can be easily repaired- either professionally, or via DIY repair kits.

Otherwise- there is a long list of good new replacement speakers, but they will be more expensive, and not tonally match the current speakers if that is important. Since the speakers are old, don't be surprised if others fail too.
Not sure how they managed to fit six speakers in a 6” x 10” cabinet, but:

As long as the ohms match, guitar speakers don't necessarily have to match. Also guitar speakers typically reach down to 70-80hz.

Go to The Gear Page, find the appropriate thread and post there. https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php

Pretty sure someone on that forum will be able to help you.

Six, 10" diameter speakers, in one cabinet.
Wow, how embarrassing that I couldn’t figure that out. I hope no one tries to repossess my Musician’s Card...
