Just picked up a set of Paradigm Mini-Monitor V6 Bookshelf Speakers. I also have a Klipsch Sub. that I use with them.

I have a chance to get a nice H/K 3390 receiver (80 watts per channel)

My current setup is:

Lexicon DC-1 Pre-Amp Processor

Southwest Technical Products Amp (25 watts per channel) … home-built in 1970’s, solid state

Airport Express - Mac Mini - iTunes Streaming

I would just be swapping the preamp/amp with the receiver … Good Idea??

Oh yeah, the 3390 has a phono stage, the preamp does not ... so I could then use my TT too ... just an after thought.

The Lexicon is a classic and it may still work well enough. I'm guessing that it doesn't support all of the latest alphabet soup related to surround encoding techniques such as:

Dolby Pro Logic IIz - with Cinema, Music, Game Modes

Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital+ Decoding

Dolby Digital Surround EX Decoding

dts-HD Master Audio and High Resolution Decoding

dts ES Discrete 6.1 Decoding

dts Neo:X Matrix Upmixing -

dts Neo:6 Stereo-to-Surround Cinema and Music Mode

dts 96/24 5.1 for DVD-Video Processing

Good outboard phono preamps are readily available and may technically exceed what you find in an AVR, so I wouldn't use that as a strong deciding point.

Upgrading from 25 wpc to 80 or more wpc is only significant if you are pushing the 25 wpc amp near or beyond clipping in your current usage, and that can still be pretty loud.

I get the feeling that 3390s are being kinda sorta closed out as they are now selling for a lot less than MSRP. (MSRP = $399, current net price more like $250. Fact is that just about any AVR can be configured for 2 channel operation, will have 80 wpc or more, and has lots of features that will be useful now or possibly down the road.

The new HK 3770 and 3700 are replacing the 3490 and 3390.

Interesting. There are two big features that seem to be hyped with the 3370 (as an example)

(1) 120 wpc up from 80 wpc

(2) 24/192 DAC

So I checked the service manual for the 3490 to see what DAC it used. Answer: AKM 4589. I looked that up and found that it is indeed a 23/192 DAC chip. You can see it here http://www.akm.com/akm/en/file/datasheet/AK4589VQ.pdf

So, to summarize one of the two most important reasons to buy the new receiver is the fact that it has a 24/192 DAC chip, just like the old receiver! LOL!

Yea, appears just a rebadged unit with some better connectivity options, ethernet, DLNA capable, bluetooth, USB etc. Power in the units is not up but the same 120 wpc in 3490 and 3370 and 80 wpc in 3390 and 3700.

It looks like these new models use the new switching power supply as well (like the latest HK AVRs). Both units only weigh 12.4 lbs. Nice that they added the streaming options but there appears to be no bass management.
