So what do you all think is the best movies for Halloween viewing? I don't mean the Halloween series (though that could be your choice) but I mean movies that are the most fun around halloween time. They don't even necessarily have to be horror movies, I mean some people might say Interview with the Vampire or The Peanuts halloween or something.

My family always enjoys watching The Nightmare Before Christmas during the Halloween season. I can't believe the first time I saw it I thought it was a bore. Thanks to the kids I've seen in countless times since then and love it every time now. Fun songs too! As for Halloween movies I like The Exorcist and my wife likes A Nightmare On Elm Street. Those are regulars this time of the year.

I would have to say "Pumpkinhead". Not a wildly popular movie but from what I understand it is sort of a cult classic. I believe it was directed by the same guy who did NOES (the original) and he turned down NOES 2 in order to do it.

Of course the NOES and Friday the 13th boxed sets are always nice to have around this time of year ;).

Another favourite is "House".

Pumpkinhead was directed by Stan Winston (Nightmare was a Wes Craven movie). He's the guy that does all of the special effects and costumes for movies like the Alien series and a whole TON of other stuff.

I only know this cause I saw this at Ralphs the other day and picked it up because i remember watching this as a kid and being freaked out but was kind of excited to see it was directed by Stan and starred Lance Hendrikson (cool actor!). Anyway, i would have bought it except it wasn't a widescreen DVD. I don't know if there's another version out.

Nightmare before christmas is a great one! Good call!!!

I always have to watch the holiday's namesake: Halloween. Michael Myers has always seemed scarier and more interesting than his counterparts in NOES and Friday the 13th to me. However, I do enjoy the original NOES as well.

For some reason I also think that Halloween III is fun to watch even though it has nothing to do with the other movies. The whole "Silver Shamrock" song kind of creeps me out especially when I was younger.

Something Wicked This Way Comes has always been one of my favorites since I was a kid. I was about 12 when I first saw it, and it left a lasting impression. I guess it's more of a kids movie, but I can't wait until my daughter is about that age so we can watch it together:)

An anamorphic edition was released several months ago; I have the earlier non-anamorphic one.

THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS, $14.99 at Best Buy, was released October 5. It's a fun little film with chuckles throughout while being a serious vampire movie at the same time. Some EE, only mono sound, but decent nevertheless.

Holloween is my wife's favorite holiday. She's already gearing up. She has already watched Nightmare Before Christmas and Sleepy Hollow.

I will be looking for the anamorphic version of SWTWC today. I didn't know it was available. I was hoping that maybe someone would put it out in DTS--wishful thinking.

Thanks

Actually I found out some more info. Winston turned down directing NOES 3 in order to do Pumpkinhead.

And no there isnt a widescreen DVD available for this movie :(. The movie was actually inspired by a poem by Ed Justin:

"Keep away from Pumpkinhead,

Unless you're tired of living,

His enemies are mostly dead,

He's mean and unforgiving,

Bolted doors and windows barred,

Guard dogs prowling in the yard,

Won't protect you in your bed,

Nothing will, from Pumpkinhead."

I have to second The Lost Boys, The Thing, The Others, and any Bruce Campbell movie ;). I would also like to suggest Event Horizon. And for the kid-concious check out:

Monster Squad

Garfield Halloween Special (Good call Greg!)

Suspiria (always)

The Howling (new edition with 5.1 added)

The Innocents

The Haunting of Hill House (original, not the stupid remake!)

Open Your Eyes (the original, not the hollywood remake)

Phantasm (if I can get anyone to watch it with me)

Dawn of the Dead remake

The Devil's Backbone (good modern spooky Spanish ghost story if you've never heard of it.)

The Ring (remake - one of the few times when the American remake is actually BETTER than the original)

Others that have been mentioned which I agree with: Return of the Living Dead (haven't seen it since I was a kid but I'm looking forward to checking it out again); The Fog; The Others (though once you see it and get the surpise ending, there's not much point in watching it again).

Scary movies I wish they'd release on DVD ... The Haunting of Julia.

Best damn ghost/poessession story I've ever seen. ACTUALLY SPOOKY. Mia Farrow stars but it's set in London ... HIGHLY HIGHLY recommened if you like spooky, intelligent ghost stories ... but you can only get it on crappy VHS ... Sigh.

One that I like which almost no one else does: Let's Scare Jessica To Death.

Very original ghost story set in the late Sixties (the people I've watched it with always complain about the dated clothing, expressions, etc, but they just don't know what they're talking about.) Not sure if it is out on DVD either though.
