Hardrive Upgrade on PS3 which one to choose?

Hey, I'm ready to purchase a hardrive for my ps3. I've decided that I'm going to go atleast 250gb with 320gb being a strong possibility. I wasn't sure which one to choose. would these work fine with my PS3?

go BIG or go home! Get the biggest drive you can get in there, I got a 120gig toshiba and I want bigger now, and have to buy a new drive

do you have a costco nearby (and a membership...) ?

You can pick up a wd 250gb external drive for $139 or less, pop it open and use the enclosure for the old drive.
What's the difference between the two 250GB drives from New Egg? Also, are WD drives more reliable or better than Samsung drives? I ask because the Samsung 250GB drives was less expensive. I'm looking to go 250GB also.
One of the 250s is an OEM drive, the other is retail. The OEM comes shipped in a static bag while the retail comes shipped in the nice WD box you see in the store complete with mounting screws, instructions and possibly a driver disc. None of which are necessary for a PS3 upgrade.
I was going to upgrade this week but I think I'm going to wait a bit- Hitatchi introduced 400 and 500GB 2.5" internal models and Samsung 500GB and claims to be able to have a 1TB model available eventually. Even if I can't afford those it should drive the price of the smaller sized models down.
Look into Seagate drives if you can, they are quiet and have a 5 year warranty.they are very reliable.

I just use the 2.5" 120GB SATA drive that comes with the 120GB Xbox360 add-on
I got it as a gift.

Are those WD Externals 2.5" sata drives though? I assumed they'd use the less expensive 3.5" sata's in them. hmm......

edit: just verified - yes the passport is 2.5" - I might run out to Costco at lunch and snag one and dissect it later for the swap. Thanks for the tip - there's even a $15 off coupon at my Costco for it - bringing it down to $124!
As far as specs go, I know the PS3 can accept a faster HDD, say a 7200RPM unit, so that made me wonder, what "speed" are people are upgrading to?

I assume that the faster spin of a 7200 HDD would use more power thus making it also generate greater heat, enough to be detrimental to the PS3 - whats the collective thinking on this, is it simply safer to upgrade to a larger capacity drive, with the same speed (5400)? Thanks.

I havent done this myself but I am thinking along the same lines as you. For me, I dont think speed is a big requirement....loading a game off hard drive of any RPM should be faster than loading off a BD.

I was going to take it a step further though and maybe even opt for one of the "super-cool-eco-drives" that only spins at 4200rpm such as this one

Another thought I had was to go with an e-SATA adapter like this one and use an eSATA drive that I could wire into a hidden drawer on the entertainment center...

I know the 250GB versions are all SATA 2.5", but the 160GB are a lottery between SATA and IDE.

To get it open no tools needed, just slide you fingernail along the 'seem' starting near the LED, it will pop open. Try to be careful not to break any of the little plastic tabs, but if a couple are toasted it will still close properly anyways (I know from experience...

This is probably a stuipd question, but does anyone know if it's possible to open a 360 HDD and upgrade it? I'd imagine not or that it is possible yet very difficult. I'd really like to upgrade my 360 drive as well, however, I don't want to pay $180 for 120GB to do so.

yes, you can, but only to a specific Western Digital model number of 120GB capacity. You have to install something on the 120GB before you can use it, though, meaning a PC is needed.

As for your LIVE content...it'll have to be redownloaded.

Here is your answer:

thanks guys, the 320gb hd specs says that it's Sata 3.0Gb/s. Is that the same as Serial ATA150? what's the difference between the two and will it effect my PS3 in any way?
hey guys, sorry if this is a redundant question, but i tried and failed at getting a good answer using the search engine. My 60 GB PS3 is dying. I bought a warranty for it, and my gamestop said they'd give me an 80 gb is exchange for it. However, one problem: I have loads of ps2/ps1 game saves, important pics, lots of downloaded games, and of course, a bunch of ps3 game saves that lots and lots of work and time have gone into. How do I back all of this up and then install on the 80 gb ps3 I woul dbe getting? Is there a simple way? or do i need to go out and get another hard drive? I know that just taking my hard 60 gb hard drive out of my ps3 and putting it into the new ps3 unit won;t work, because i tried that once before back at launch, and it made me format and wipe my old hard drive when i tried to put it into a different ps3. I am quite desperate here; can i back all this data up on a big memory stick, and then install it all on the new ps3 and its hard drive once I get it? Or do I need to buy a new hard drive, and transfer all the contents from my 60 gb over to it now before i exchange it for the new ps3? if that's the case, anybody have a good link for directions on how to go about doing this? Sorry for the long post...i just have to do this all this weekend, because my warranty expires sunday. Thanks so much for all of your help! Any advice would be much appreciated!

There's a backup feature on the PS3 that allows you to backup everthing that you have on your PS3. just plug An external hardrive into the PS3 and back it up. Then when you have your new 80 gb PS3 set up, just plug the external hardrive into your playstation and restore everything that you've backed up

edit: you can use a memory card as well

thank u very much for all your help. going to go buy external tomorrow. any special requirements/suggestions, aside from being external?
make sure that your external hardrive is formated to Fat32 in order for the PS3 to recognize it.
