I'm contemplating setting up a HTPC. Question is, what gives you better video quality, software players and/or hardware decoders? If I don't use something like a Dxr3 card what are the minimum system requirements for playing DVD's with just software decoding?

I currently have an Athlon 700 with 512MB RAM. Video card is a Voodoo5 5500, sound card is a SB Live. My concern is that currently DVD playback is not smooth. It's not extremely jerky, but it's not what I would want for HT applications. I may build a dedicated computer for this purpose. Seems like everyone likes the Geforce2 card for video, and there's a whole lot of sound boards that will work for 5.1 sound.

In the meta FAQ (below), select HTPC FAQ, then Software decoding or hardware? Which is better?

Thanks, those articles helped a lot.

I'm such an idiot, I just looked at my drivers and realized that my DMA settings were all screwed up from a while back when I was messing around with ATA/66 stuff. Once I set the DVD drive properly it works fine.
