Harmon Kardon versus Pioneer Elite...Opinions Please!

537 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Enigma869
Good Evening All...

As I continue my search for a new receiver to replace my Onkyo, I am looking at the Harmon Kardon AVR-7300, and also looking at Pioneer Elite models. I'm hoping to hear some opinions from those who might be educated about both manufacturers models. I didn't nail down a specific Elite model, because I just recently learned Pioneer even made any receivers that were worth consideration. I am most receptive and would be most appreciative if someone could point me toward a specific Elite model (hopefully comparable to the AVR-7300). For the record, most uses are going to be for TV (mostly sports and news) and DVD's (mostly music concerts, and movies). I guess like everyone else, I am looking for the manufacturer who seems to offer the most value (i.e. most features for its price) and features. I would also like something that is fairly user friendly. I've read the HK remote is horrendously poor but, that wouldn't be a deal breaker if it's a far superior receiver. As always, any and all feedback from the knowledgable people on this forum are most appreciated!

p.s. Not sure if it matters or not, but I am using mostly HDTiVo with DirecTV and a Hitachi VS 60 inch LCD rear projection screen. Everything has HDMI capabilities.

Here's a review for the VSX-74TXi that you were interested in earlier:

I may get flamed for this.......... Check out on the net and here as well for threads concerning HK and Pioneer Elite and see what owners say about them. My point is while HK makes a great sounding receiver as does Pioneer, HK receivers have more quality issues than Pioneer Elite receivers. There's a thread here devoted to HK quality issues as well.

While HK has a great reputation for making it right with their customer service, why have the problem in the first place?

I've had 3 Pioneer Elite receivers, only upgraded for better performance, never have had a quality issue. The 55TXi and 56TXi were made in Malaysia, the 59TXi is made in Japan. From every model I have looked at the HK (including the flagship AVR-7300) are made in China. Is that the reason for the higher than normal quality issues? Don't know for sure, but if I were a betting man......... ;)

Thanks for the response, Fred! I think I am probably going to pull the trigger on a Pioneer in the next couple of days and put the Onkyo up on eBay.
