The stars seem aligned for a nice convergence in the coming months:

1. Historically, the Christmas season / football season is when more television sets are sold than at any other time of year;

2. HDTV set prices have been falling significantly, with the basic models reaching an affordable level making them attractive to the sweet spot of the market; and

3. As we have witnessed, HD programming choices have increased rapidly through all three of the major access points (cable, satellite and over-the-air). Sports, movies and prime-time network shows are now well represented, regular offerings.

It follows that there will be a significant increase in the number of HD sets purchased between now and the end of January, with these new viewers demanding even more HD channels and programs. And the availability of more HD programming choices will, in turn, fuel further demand for HD sets. Suddenly, HD ratings will matter and commercials in HD will appear, targeting the attractive HD viewer demographic.

More likely the verge of a full blown case of "more is betterer" attitude and the continued degradation of HD video quality.
