Has anybody ever used center channel speakers as surrounds?

I have very low ceilings.

When I used traditional surrounds people kept hitting their heads on the speakers.

I switched to some in-ceiling speakers but I don't like the sound.

I started looking for some low profile speakers and came to the realization that some center channel speakers would be a great height.

Any experiences?

Yes center channels would work just fine as surrounds, AV123 sells a package with all 5 channels as center channels, they make great surrounds, they aren't super deep, are sealed cabinets, have plenty of output, go ahead, the only issues you will run into are what to do with all that good sound

I currently use Monitor RS LCRs for my center channel as well as my rears, they work great.

Keep in mind that the vast majority of horizontal MTM center speakers are severely compromised in their radiation patterns and using more of them will only compound the issue. This will affect the specificity of sound localization and variations in response from seat to seat. Of course, if used for surrounds only and for HT only, that may not be too much of an issue.
Thank you for the responses.
What about very small speakers like Orbs? Or inwalls?
I have a friend who owns 7.1 set of the Jamo D4 series and uses two centres as his back rears and it works just fine. Surround effect is simply amazing.
I plan on using Jamo 515k4 inwall centers as my fronts.

I'm glad you brought that up. The MTM is actually supposed to be run vertically, but most run it horizontally for aesthetics - horizontal looks better. If you turn in vertical, it will sound better, but you have to main it down if using it for the surrounds...
