I'm talking about vertical and horizontal screen size, not position. I called Samsung and the rep that answered didnt really have any idea what I was talking about. Then after a few minutes of going back and forth and him telling me that the picture adjustments were on the remote, I made the mistake of telling him that I didnt see any adjustments in the service menu for this either (and btw, all I did was just "look" for an obvious vsize or hsize adjustment and when I didnt see any I just exited out) Now he's telling me that my warranty is void, which seems silly because I could have sworn there was a "reset" feature that puts back everything to factory specs so I really dont think there's any way to cause irreversable damage.

In any case, if someone knows a higher up Samsung rep that I can talk to regarding this I would greatly appreciate it. (If the screen size cant be adjusted, fine, but my warranty voided for simply entering the service menu and not making any adjustments seems ridiculous!) I cant beleive I'm getting this kind of service when I was simply asking whether a small adjustment could be made to the vertical size. I dont think its too much to ask when someone purchases one of Samsung's top of the line DLP sets. (HLP-5085W)

Hi Carlos,

I have not found any size adjustments in the service menus. The aspect ratio on my set is wrong (4% tall) for PAL progressive over HDMI, but looks OK for interlaced via SCART, but I haven't checked the various inputs in detail.

The service menu Reset entry appears to only reset the user settings, no effect on any changes made in the service menus - I have all the settings for my set if you do try changing something and want to check the default, and the default settings are all listed in the service manual (I have one on order, will let you know if there is anything interesting in it). As for entering the service menu voiding your warranty, that's just bluff and bluster. Anything you alter in there can be altered back easily. If a warranty claim was made to correct a setting that the user had changed in the service menu, then it would probably be dismissed, but going into the service menu has no effect on your consumer rights and there are no provisions in the warranty terms that prohibit this.

Your best route to getting the size corrected may be to simply claim that as the image ratio is wrong the set is defective and demand that it be repaired or replaced. That way you may at least get an answer as to whether it is even possible to correct this.

JohnPM,

Thanks for your help. My set has the same 4-5% tall issue also. If I could get this fixed somehow the aspect ratio would be perfect. Btw, I've noticed this on both the component and DVI inputs. Ultimately, its not really a big deal, but it just seems like it should be an easy fix. As far as the warranty is concerned, I sure hope the Samsung rep didnt make a note on my account saying my warranty is void. (they do have my sets serial number)

Calling any AVSForum users that have Samsung connections - please help me out!

I don't understand what you mean by "vertical image size". Are you trying to get rid of "over-scan"?

Yes. The aspect ratio is slightly off. (ex: circles in the outer corners arent as round as they should be - they're slightly stretched) Decreasing the vertical overscan would fix it.

I don't believe there is a SM control that will change over-scan. If your input is coming from a HTPC it's possible to use software to create a custom resolution within 1280x720 that will reduce over-scan.

Carlos,

When you launched the service menu, did it give you a warning about voiding your warranty?

Pull out your warranty on the TV and see if it explicity tells you not to go into service menu or else your warranty is void.

Looking at the warranty info Samsung provides online, it does not even mention SM.

If you've never seen anything from Samsung that would indicate that going into a Menu Driven system could void your warranty, then I don't believe Samsung can actually void your warranty. Ask them where it states that going into the SM will void your warranty if there isn't any place then they should back down.

I took out the warranty information card that came with my tv. No where does it mention anything about the service menu. If anyone can find something different, I'd like to know.

In the two years I've been reading this forum the issue of Samsung, the SM, and warranties has come up many times. The only other time a voided warranty was mentioned was when someone messed up the settings so much that his set was unwatchable. Then he told a low level CS person what he had done. He was told that his warranty was voided. In the long run I think he got it reinstated.

Now the guy who drilled through circuit boards to hang his HLM617 from his bed room celling wasn't so lucky.

"Thou shalt not wave your SM activities under the nose of a low level CS person!"
