It appears that the model number for the Hauppauge HD-PVR is 1212, and the current retail price is about $200. However, if you do a search for Hauppauge 1288, the specs appear identical, the product photo looks the same, but the price is about $60. However, the only reference I can find to a model number 1288 on Hauppauge's web site is for an internal PCI card TV tuner.

Does anyone know what is going on here? I'm guessing this is a massive, widespread error - is there some sort of "master catalog" that all of these web stores pull their info from, and it is wrong? If so, you would think that it would have been corrected by now, as a lot of people will be sorely disappointed when the product they receive is nothing like what the ordered. (Assuming that model number 1288 is not an HD PVR of course.) The only other thing I can think of is possibly the 1288 is an earlier, discontinued version but this doesn't seem likely - not with a higher model number...

For $60, I've been tempted to buy one to see what shows up, but I'm almost certain this is a mistake and I'd rather not have the hassle of returning it when the wrong part shows up.

If you read down a little further it says the manufacturer's part number is 1228. This appears to be a UK version, not sure how it differs, if at all, from the 1212.

From compsource.com, another Hauppauge vendor:

[Question] What is the difference between this and the hauppauge 1212? How come they seem so similar but at the same time their prices are so much different. And how come when i search for this on the hauppauge website i can't find a Hauppauge 1288?

Question by Eranio 11/4/2010 1

[Answer] I'm sorry the 1288 Is an internal card. The 1212 is ext. they are not really a similar item. We are resolving this now.

The photo they show for the 1288 is an internal capture card that has nothing to do with the Hauppauge 1212. Don't be tempted. The buy.com photo for the 1288 is wrong. Compsource.com made a change in their photo to show the proper 1288 unit. Buy.com still has the error.
