I bought a Hauppauge HD PVR 2 and have recorded programming from my cable provider's STB. Is there a way to toggle closed captions on/off with captures made with the Hauppauge? From my experience so far, if I want CCs, I have to enable them on the STB, make a recording with the Hauppauge, but then the CCs are a permanent part of the video.

I believe your video input card is recording whatever is on screen - pixel for pixel.
CC should be part of broadcast stream and decoder has capability to turn it on or off.
If you use Hauppauge to record video output from STB than I am afraid you can't get what you are trying to do.
If you use it to decode broadcast (analog or digital through either cable or OTA connection) than you should be good.

That box is a capture device, anything you see on the screen it will record which basically hard codes the CC if your familiar with .SRT files.
