I know that the video is only passthrough and that's why I bought optical cables for the audio to use the 7.1. The problem is, I can get the video to show on one receiver input but no audio. when I switch to a different input, I can get audio but no video. I really want to get the surround sound to work with the video. Any ideas?

You need to indicate what cables you are using and what avr and display etc..

I'm using a Sony 32" HD Wega with HDMI, a Pioneer 1016txvk, blue jeans optical and hdmi cables, and a sony ps3.

Since digital audio inputs are not assigned by default to any device in particular, you need to tell your receiver which digital audio input is used by which input device. For example: dvd player - optical1. You do this in set up menu (refer to your manual).
