I have a Samsung 46" (model LNT4661FX/XAA) 1080P LCD and I've hooked up my HTPC (based on the new gigabyte 785 board) via HDMI. I have no idea what I should set my desktop resolution to. Could someone please help me out?

I've tried 1920x1080 and 1280x720 but the display doesn't seem to be right. Doesn't seem as clear as if I had it hooked up to my normal 21" monitor.

Likewise, when I try to play 1080p content via PowerDVD for example, the picture is nothing like it is when viewing normal HD tv content via DirecTV. Any ideas?

Thanks

It should be set to [email protected] - make sure you turn off overscanning in both the monitor and the computer.

It won't look as a clear as your 21" monitor because your looking at the same # of pixels spread out over 5x the area - pixel density is lower. Now, depending on your viewing distance this is really not an issue, but your reaction is not uncommon when one moves to a larger screen.

But - make sure you set the tv to "just scan" (I believe that's what it's called on your set) and turn off any overscanning that the GPU may be doing.

Thanks a lot for the reply,

Dumb question... is deinterlacing the same thing as overscan?

I just checked my LCD's settings and I see the "just scan" option in the same area where I see 16:9 though. Should I change the TV from 16:9 to "just scan" ? If so, will I need to change this back whenever I view my DirecTV?

I set my video card driver from Desktop-->right click-->Display & from Catalyst to [email protected] I also set the TV to just scan. Now the display is a rectangular box within the main TV screen. I don't understand how to get a full view picture while maintaining these settings...

That should be input-specific, you'll be ok there.

When you say "the display" is a rectangular box-does this happen when you are playing a BD or all the time?

Deinterlacing is not the same thing as overscan. Deinterlacing is how an interlaced signal (1080i-which is a broadcast standard) is converted to an non-interlaced (such as 1080p-which is not a broadcast standard-even though most sets now display that resolution).

Overscan (basically) means that the entire image is not displayed on your set-there is a small border (typically 3-5%) that exists beyond the frame of your screen. CE devices are made to take this into account, while computers (and their digital monitors) do not require this buffer. (I've explained this quickly and poorly-if you run a quick search you'll probably find a much more eloquent and thorough explanation)

Someone else will have to jump in on the "black box" thing-it pops up every once in awhile around here-sometimes the solution is to try a different HDMI input as on some monitors one is designated as a "PC" one-

Sorry about the lack of specifics... I see black border around the entire screen (maybe .25 to .5")

I also tried a new hdmi cable and used a different port on the tv but it didn't resolve it. Thanks for the info, I guess I'll do some searching around
