This will likely be the way to watch HBO, assuming someone confirms it is at least in 1080i and not downrezzed to 720p to non-compete with Comcast.
it's the definitive way to watch HBO...even with their launch issues, lack of original content, lack of 4K etc it's still the best option...when they add in all those features and new content it'll only get better...I cancelled my Amazon Channel HBO add-on subscription as it's no longer needed (plus I still have the free HBO Go app)...so in the end I'm saving $14.99 a month since it's 'free' with my Verizon FiOS cable package

more information on the Amazon/WarnerMedia dispute...

"The fissures between WarnerMedia and Amazon are complex and not easily resolved. By some estimates, Channels is responsible for roughly half of all HBO online subscriptions. Amazon takes a cut of 30% to 50% for any subscription service it resells through Channels, according to multiple industry insiders. HBO is said to be on the lower end of that range, but that still leaves Amazon with an estimated nine-figure revenue share per year"

I think the confusing part is that 'regular' HBO is the same price as HBO Max ($14.99)...so I can understand Amazon/Apple saying if it's the same price why can't we get access to HBO Max...in the end Max is going to be treated the same as Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu etc and not be included as part of the Channels add-on
I read that the reason the price is the same is the contractual obligations that AT&T has to the cable providers to not undercut the $14.99 pricing that has been in place for HBO for years. Theoretically, AT&T could have decided to be more aggressive with HBO Max pricing at launch to attack Netflix and others, but they couldn't. Messy.....

the Amazon/Roku stalemate is interesting...if I were HBO I would not allow Max to be included as part of Amazon/Apple Channels...keep the regular HBO as part of Amazon/Apple channels and force people interested in Max to use the separate app
I like having as many of my channels under Prime Video Channels and one integrated Fire TV UI. But, you would lose multiple profiles and some of the layout structure that HBO Max is attempting. Choices....

I can understand both sides of the argument...WarnerMedia brought this on themselves by having redundant apps like HBO Go/Max/Now...but I understand what they are saying- they should be allowed to have their own standalone app like Netflix and Amazon Video...but Amazon/Apple is saying- why should we get a gimped version of HBO when Max is being offered for the exact same price...plus Netflix never had a Netflix 'light' version on Apple/Amazon Channels...it's going to be interesting to see how this all plays out

HBO stops participating in Apple TV Channels, users directed to HBO Max app

Starting today, the HBO channel has been removed from the Apple TV app if you don’t already subscribe to it...if you are a current subscriber, the channel will still be visible for the time being but will not be updated to feature Max-exclusive content...the HBO Apple TV channel now features a carousel advertising the Max service...tapping on any of the panels directs you to download the HBO Max app

The long and the short of it is that HBO wants you to use their service through their application, HBO Max...they are no longer interested in reselling their service through a third-party UI like the Apple TV app interface...

HBO Max Is Available to Comcast Customers, After WarnerMedia Lands Post-Launch Deal

Better late than never: WarnerMedia clinched a deal with Comcast for HBO Max, with the final pact officially hammered into place just hours after the super-size streaming service launched early Wednesday...under the deal, Comcast’s existing HBO subscribers with Xfinity X1 and Xfinity Flex will be able to log in to HBO Max on supported devices — for no additional charge...

Here's the Comcast press release today. It looks promising in that any Comcast subscriber to the service should be able to log in to the HBO Max website or app using your Xfinity credentials just as you can now via HBO Go:

The whole neutral pricing thing makes it more emotional for people than it has to be.

If AT&T believes HBO Max is worth $14.99 a month than logically HBO alone should be less. Let's say $11.99 a month. Then you have a choice that removes emotion. You want HBO Max, use standalone app. You want an integrated channel with your streaming device of choice, we have HBO. And when they add an ad-supported model in 2021 that might be only available on standalone app. But, when you tell people to pay the same amount and not get the same, people feel aggrieved.

so Doom Patrol season 2 is premiering on HBO Max in June...but why would anyone watch it on HBO Max in 1080p when it'll also be available on DC Universe in 4K HDR
How many people are subscribed to DC Universe at $7.99 a month?

A lot more will automatically get upgraded from HBO to HBO Max and might discover the show. They will likely never know there is a 4K version available somewhere else. I will subscribe to HBO Max and let my 4K TV upscale the HBO Max 1080p stream. A benefit of aging eyes and enough distance from the screen. I will not notice!!

HBO Max needs to get this launch over, get over their fight with Roku and Amazon and get to work on delivering 4K/HDR/ATMOS support on their content. That will make $14.99 a month more justifiable month after month.

AND why are they holding back CINEMAX content from HBO Max? Another $9.99 a month is a bridge too far...

I already subscribe to HBO through Xfinity. I wasn't really looking forward to HBOMax all that much but since I wasn't going to have to pay any extra for it, I figured why not take a look. It installed on my iPad and iPhone fine but I don't watch TV on my iPhone or iPad. I figured if I was ever really to use it, it would have to be on the PS4 (which I use for Amazon Prime Video, Netfilx, Hulu, and Disney+) so I installed it there and it plays back 2.0 channel audio only. Sure, all the screens say 5.1 but on a PS4, it's only 2.0. I suspected this might be the case because HBOGO on the PS4 is 2.0 only. That never made sense to me as the PS4 is quite capable of 5.1 playback with all the other streaming services I mentioned above and HBOGO is 5.1 on FireTV, Roku, and XBOX. So, why not PS4? (if anyone knows the real reason for this I'd love to know). I thought that maybe... since this was supposed to be their newest, latest and greatest that maybe it would work but it doesn't. Many here are saying it's unthinkable to launch an app in 2020 without 4K/HDR/DolbyVision and there may be something to that but... 2.0 channel audio only??? In 2020??? Really??? There's no way I'd even consider watching it. App deleted.

I have a question:

I was an HBO Now subscriber and have now been "upgraded" to HBO Max. Unfortunately, I only have Rokus and Fire sticks throughout my house at the moment for streaming devices. However, I do have YouTube TV. But I don't see a way for YouTube TV to recognize this subscription. So what do I do? Do I really have to cancel my HBO subscription and then subscribe with it through YouTube TV? What happens if YouTube TV doubles in price and I decide to go with a different service, do I then resubscribe to HBO? This seems silly. I'm paying $15/mo for HBO Max and I am a YouTube TV subscriber... can I really not watch my HBO Max on Youtube TV?

If Roku and Fire TV Sticks are you only option for viewing then you can not view HBO Max content.

Even if you would subscribe through YouTubeTV to the HBO add-on, which will get you HBO Max content, you still have to install the HBO Max standalone app to access the 'Max' portion of HBO Max. As of today, you can not install HBO Max on a Roku or Fire Stick TV device. People in the Roku support forum are finding that out today and are not very pleased.

FYI. I am in the same situation. I have three (3) Roku TV's with three (3) Fire TV Stick 4K devices attached to each. I can still access HBO NOW or HBO GO app to view HBO only content on Roku or Fire TV Stick. If I want to view HBO Max content I have to switch over to the HDMI input for my Home Theater PC I have attached to my Roku TV and login through a web browser.

AT&T's WarnerMedia has HBO Max apps ready for Roku and Amazon Fire TV

Andy Forssell, executive vice president and general manager of WarnerMedia's direct-to-consumer products, tells CNET that the company has HBO Max applications ready to go for both Roku and Amazon Fire TV...once deals are reached, Forssell says the apps could be on either platform's app stores, "minutes later."...

You would think this incompetent company would have had this all done before launch. They wonder why they are a disaster of a company. I am an AT&T customer too for phones and the old AT&T TV Now/Direct TV Now but they are just getting worse and worse. I'm ok with the phone service but they really have no idea what they are doing in the TV service space. They are scattered and all over the place with their services.
Anyway I'm about 2 seconds away from quitting my grandfathered AT&T TV Now plan to go to YTTV.

Quick browse around HBO Max and all three (3) LORD OF THE RINGS movies are there and the first and third movie of THE HOBBIT. No listing for THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG.

EDIT: Just looked in the LAST CHANCE section and the two HOBBIT movies still available will be dropping off soon.

I guess the Journey will be interrupted...
Desolation of Smaug is coming to HBO Max on June 1st...so Smaug is coming in while the other 2 Hobbit movies are listed under Last Chance lol

Does anyone know what AT&T phone plans get you Max free? We have an unlimited plan but I don't think that gets us this free. We have the old AT&T TV Now grandfathered plan too.

I checked out a few items on HBO Max using an Nvidia Shield.

OAR appears to be intact, nothing I've come across is has been cropped or blown out.

I watched the latest X-Men film, and this was in Dolby Digital Plus.

Dolby Digital Plus works for new programming, but not all. I watched Ben Hur yesterday evening, and the audio was 2.0. The TCM Section is pretty nice if you're into classic movies. I also checked out a few minutes of "How the West was Won" it had a very nice image without the obvious three lens morph that I'm accustom to looking at. You can see the lines, but you have to know what you're looking for. If you're not familiar with the film, then you may not even know that they are present throughout the film.

The Studio Ghibli section was a suprise. I watched a little of Castle in the Sky, and this film had Dolby Digital Plus for audio.

I'm really not expecting HDR or Atmos anytime soon, and I'd rather have them done properly, rather than a quick batch job considering the amount of content that is available for this service.
