Last month, I wanted to catch The Firm from Cinemax. The HBO web site (shows both HBO and Cinemax schedules) had it's True HDTV designation, but when it came on, it was a 4:3 upconvert. Dismayed, I ripped out the tape and put my tail between my legs.

Last night, after recording Carnivale, I happened to leave the channel on HBO. Lo and behold, what comes on, but a HD, 1.85:1 version of The Firm. After I kicked my cable box for HBO's trickery, I checked the schedule for the next showings. I have the pleasure of either getting the 4:25am showing on 3/11, or the 1:45am showing on 3/28.

They're tricksy, they are!!!:(

This was a very good looking transfer. I watched part of it last night. I'm going to try to stay up late for one of the next showings and record it to DVHS. I could Tivo it but this is one I would like to keep.

One of the best PQ's I've seen on a film that old. Was somewhat mezmerized last night... although I still sometimes wonder why people find Jeanne Tripplehorn attractive (to each his own, but she just doesn't do it for me).

gotta see her in some of the Basic Instinct scenes...she's made up to be hotter in that film...the character is much more homey looking in the Firm.

You guys must not have seen Waterworld. That's okay; not many did. ;)

Does this HBOHD showing mean MaxHD will get the same version.?
Good question. I assumed that the HBOHD showing would be 4:3. It seems silly to me to give CinemaxHD a 4:3 version and keep the 16:9 version for HBOHD.

So, while it is not on CinemaxHD in March, keep an eye open to see what they do. In the meantime, enjoy "Busty Cops"!!!:D

I recorded "The Firm" on my DVR last night and started to watch it today. The combination of OAR and a first class transfer is nice.

Why not just set the timer to record to DVHS? why stay up for it?

On my decks (JVC 40k), the timer function does not control the firewire inputs. I could invest in remote commander, but I like to get as close to the movie start as possible and the timers can be off. I'll probably just pop in 3 1/2 hour tape, set the timer and then make a clean copy the next day.

If you have DISH network receiver.. you can simply set the timer to turn on and off the recording on the JVC by choosing "The Firm" on the program guide.

I record whole bunch of movies off HBO in the middle of the night.. never have to wake up to turn on the recording.

Oh ya.. I record HBO off Adelphia cable's HD box.. sad but true... you have to use 3 pieces of equipments to make HD recording work!

Pat you really need to invest in one of those remotes. They are a life saver. Trust me.
