HC1500 - Lack of Aspect Ratio Choices

1113 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  bcarlsen
I just bought a Mits HC1500 and it's terrific. My only complaint is that for HD sources (720p, 1080i) you can't change the aspect ratio to get rid of the black bars at the top/bottom for letter-boxed films (2.35:1)! You're stuck with 1.85:1 all the time. BUT if you are using an SD source (480p) you get options-galore like zoom and stretch. Why don't they include those settings for HD???

I have digital cable and have my box set to provide 720p and 1080i.

I used hdmi and when viewing HD channels 1080i it filled the screen. No zoom or anything needed.

Now other SD cable channels that are upconverted by cable box to 1080i only have black bars on left and right and can fill the screen with zoom from cable box. Actually looked pretty good. I dont zoom much though I like all the picture.

You should start reading about 2.35:1 Constant Image Height display. By the way, this is not an HD/SD issue. SD DVDs can be viewed in widescreen and this issue also arises.
Bcarlson,

I'm not sure what you are asking -

Are you saying you want to corrupt and distort the image to force a 2.35:1 ratio image into your 16x9 screen size? Are you saying you want to zoom it bigger (thus loosing one third of the original image),

or (shudder) streeeetch the image, making tall skinny people from 2.35:1 movies or short, fat people from 3:4 video content?

Why do you want to do that?

No - this allows you to view 2.35:1 material in the correct aspect ratio and at the same time use the full resolution of your projector (no resolution is wasted by black bars on the top and bottom).
