I got a Samsung HD931 for $80, but the lip sync issue I've read about is pretty annoying when watching movies. Is there a fix or firmware update that fixes this?

I only noticed it on DTS, but I'm unwilling to live with a DD only player.

The delay on DTS is terrible with the 931. So much so that I don't use it anymore. The black crush issue is also present. Funny, I never really noticed the full effect of the black crush until I just switched it over from my Sammy 56 DLP to my SP 7205 front projector. Ditto on waiting for my 2910 to arrive.

You paid too much. ;)

No, seriously, I have the HD931 also. I got annoyed by the lip synch issue too. I didn't see it on anything, but DTS until I watch the Star Wars trilogy. I saw it there too!

Sometimes, this player can look really, really good and other times, it is completely opposite (dark scenes). The black crush is really bad.

I had mine worked on and Samsung could not fix it. I will be getting a refund. Ive already purchased the Denon 1910 (actually the silver 755s) and I like it much better so far.

I'm gonna hold off for the Panasonic s97. Do all of the upconverting players accentuate the grain in films like the 931?

Well, the grain is probably from the original film and was just not as clear before. Even on the Denon, I see some film grain. But, the 931 did not handle blacks very well (It couldn't pass blacker than black), so some dark scenes looked terrible!

The Denon does a much better job. The only issue with the denon is slight macroblocking sometimes. I have seen it occasionally, but it doesn't bother me so far.

Side by side, you can see a big difference in the denon and sammy 931. I know because I have both.

It seemed like the 931 had an unnaturally high contrast.

I agree. I think that is a Sammy thing as it is the same way on Sammy's T160 STB.

What's the scoop on the HD841?? I was thinking about picking one of these up. The manufacture date is 06-04.

I don't believe Samsung has made a good DVD player yet. I don't like them in this market at all. I'd steer clear of them and get the Panny s97, Sony 975, Zenith 318...hell, any other mainstream brand practically.

I'm not surprised at all. I would give up and get a better brand player ASAP.

I read somewhere that Samsung moved the product info for the forthcoming HD-941 to the "archive" section of their website. That, plus some retailers like Amazon have changed the availability from "Back/preorder" to "Discontinued" makes you wonder whether Samsung is reconsidering their future in the DVD player market. For the record, I had the DTS lip sync issue with my 931 and was awaiting a 941 as a replacement.

Amazon also has the Panasonic s97 as dicontinued, so I'm hoping this doesn't really mean anything.

I bought a 931 several months ago thinking i was going to be getting a dvi tv sooner than i actually did. I haven't tried it through DVI or component yet, but will be getting a tv i can use it on this week. It sounds like the player is pretty much a bust. Is samsung replacing these players or are we SOL??

?

I got the 931, the day it came out, as a DVI source for my Samsung DLP. I have been very satisfied with the picture quality of that combination. So I wouldn't say that it's a complete 'bust'.

However, lip-sync problems with DTS soundtracks and the crappy remote control are another matter. I will be replacing it for those reasons (hopefully with an HD941! - if not, then I may jump all the way up to the Denon 3910)

Anyway, since you already have it, and it sounds like its beyond the return period, you ought to give it a look over DVI before putting it on e-bay.
