Here is a small example of going from lossy codecs to PCM / TRUE HD:
My mini review of 3:10 to Yuma:
1st...Loved the film. I thought it moved at a good pace throughout.
Video. Very nice overall..Some big pans showed some grain and had a gritty look to it. Close ups were sharp as a tack. Colors were good and blacks deep and detailed.
Sound. Listened to the 7.1 Uncompressed Lossless track. A mixed bag. I watched at +1 over THX reference level but found the soundtrack somewhat quiet. Dialog was easily understood. Surround effects were aplenty from all over the room. Bullets all over the place. Ambient sounds were almost always present thoughout Gun blasts were big but lacked the bass and power of those in 'Open Range'. The best low end came as the train rolled into town. It reminded me of Polar Express. Deep, powerful and loud as the mighty engine rolled in. Some of the mine blasts were great as well. All and all, the low end could've been better and the shot gun blasts more powerful but all and all very satisfying.
I have noticed the uncompressed tracks seem to have a lower noise floor and more dynamics...You get fooled into turning it up louder than you might. Really a great upgrade from lossy old DD and DTS. Moreover, 2 more weeks with LPCM in my theater. I can easily conclude that it is a worthy upgrade... I would subjectively call the improvement over my already excellent lossy sound to be on the order of ~ 20%.
Dynamics, subjectively lower noise floor, surround effects (particularly more improved than any other area), AND dialog intelligibility. All improved........but bass is not too perceivably improved over lossy. No worse for sure but only minutely improved if at all.
Yeah...surround effects, ambiance, etc seems to be most improved area of the lossless surround sound experience. More detail, ambiance, localization, etc..
