Does anyone know the details of the decoder ships used in the HD cable boxes? The reason I ask is that my system could be simplified if I could get RGB output. I could eliminate the need for a transcoder. The pc decoder cards have a software switch to change the signal from RGB to component. I believe they use the Janus chipset for decoding and this must be a feature of the chip. Is there a chance that a software revision in the future could allow this option on the current Cable boxes, or has RGB been dropped from newer chipsets?

Just curious if anyone had any insight...

Many of the newest non-cable HD receivers have RGB outputs, so I suspect their lack on cable boxes may be more of a 'lowest-common-denominator' decision rather than being not possible at all.

The LG 3510a has both ATSC and clear QAM HD tuners with RGB output, so there is at least one clear QAM STB with RGB available. I don't follow scrambled QAM developments, so I don't know what is available in that case.
