Is it likely that HD DVD will offer a 1080p24sf output - making it compatible with the Qualia?

Could something like this be added in software to make 1080p disks output in this format?

It is much too early to tell. Most likely the 1st gen of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD stand alone players's will output 1080i to make them the most HDTV compatible.

Let's hope for Blu-Ray/HD-DVD-ROM early.

It wouldn't surprise me if this is one reason they have put 1080p24sf support in the HS51 and Qualia.

That is not one of the formats listed in EIA/CEA-861-B, which HDMI references.

The listed 1080 timings include:

Format 5 - 1920x1080i @59.94/60 Hz *

Format 16 - 1920x1080p @ 59.94/60 Hz

Format 20 - 1920x1080i @ 50 Hz **

Format 31 - 1920x1080p @ 50 Hz

Format 32 - 1920x1080p @ 23.976/24 Hz

Format 33 - 1920x1080p @ 25 Hz

Format 34 - 1920x1080p @ 29.97/30 Hz

It could always be added to a future revision, but why? Format 32 is the better choice.

* Required in 60 Hz HD displays

** required in 50 Hz HD displays

The rest are all optional to support.

Just to be different. :) I'm not sure why, but Sony does seem to like the 1080p24sf right now. Since it is listed in the HS51 I think it might also end up being supported in their next RPTVs also.

Blu-ray supports 1080p at 24p and you can download the BD-ROM technical white paper here . Also 1080p24sf doesn't make sense for storage since you can pretty easily convert 1080p at 24p into 1080p24sf. As such output at 1080p24sf would be entirely based on whether the Blu-ray player supports it. Whats important is not what the player supports since that depends on the manafacturer but what the format supports. I believe HD-DVD will support 1080p at 24p but no official specifications have been released on HD-DVD so far.

Well, they invented the format (for HDCAM). I've used [email protected] extensively,

and the most notable advantage is that many studio CRT monitors that won't sync

on [email protected] will do fine with [email protected] (thinking it's 48i). I have other

reasons for preferring [email protected], but they're too esoteric to list here.

[email protected] is not a storage format. There's no way to signal segmented frame

in MPEG-2, VC-1 or H.264. If I sent you a [email protected] MPEG-2 bitstream, you could

not determine if the encoder was sourced from [email protected] or [email protected]
