HD-DVD PC Drive - VGA

562 Views 15 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Ursa
I looked at little dinky toy so-called "NEC HR-1100A" which is a HD-DVD the web review.

They said when viewing HD movies off this drive you won't be able to view the movie via VGA/SVGA connection. I'm like.... wtf?

My current setup wipes bathroom and kitchen floors in terms of delivering HD videos so why can't this be done with the future HD-DVD drive?

What are my options? my Ati x800xt video card has DVI out. Would getting a DVI-to-HDMI cable and a damn HDMI blade for my PHD7UY will work??

3 words...Digital Rights Management.

Your options are this:

1 - Buy a standalone player such as the A1 or XA1.

2 - Wait and buy a videocard that has HDMI connections, then purchase the HDMI blade and an HD-DVD drive to go in your PC.

IMHO, for me it was just easier to go with the HD-A1 stadalone for my NEC 50XR5A.

I wonder if movies can be played over vga at 720p/1080i since it is analog....

Are you wondering in terms of if it can "handle" it, or if it's "compatible"?.

BOSS10L, I don't want to purchase external HD-DVD player... I'd like to keep it HTPCeee.......

VGA can handle 720p and 1080i just fine (it can even do 1080p if we wanted to but AACS will not allow 1080p over component analog, though, it could be different from vga analog, I'm not sure). IMO, I think watching hd dvd over vga should be find at 720p/1080i as long as there's no ICT flag on media. However, I'm not sure what the AACS requirements are for hd dvd and pcs.

If you want to use HDMI or DVI from your pc to your monitor, you're going to need an hdcp compatible video card along with an hdcp compatible monitor I presume.

ah! I see... That's interesting ...... well, I wonder the same then!

Can this be turned into "Digital Rights Manual Override"??
I haven't heard about HDCP compatible video cards yet... maybe I haven't done reading so I may have missed it... This is too much hassle, guys :( I want headache-free ....

I don't want to spend money on a new video card, new blade, and cable..(i do have hdmi but..) I just wanna cry. :(
Nope. That's sort of the whole point. ;)
Thanks for the help, BOSS10L. I was being a slob.... Sometimes I'm so careless... why is that. :-(

anyways.. it seems there is no easy way to have HTPC to work with HD-DVD drive with VGA.. aww.. this sux. If nothing else, I might have to endup buying external HD-DVD player..
I don't know why otherwise internet savvy users keep making assumptions instead of searching ;)

ADVANCED ACCESS CONTENT SYSTEM (“AACSâ€) INTERIM ADOPTER AGREEMENT

AACS allows analog outputs via "widely implemented computer video outputs" including UXGA. Where 1080p/720p is a "similar computer video output", I don't know.

Oh yehh!! bebe!!

That's very good to hear. I really like the sound of that. :) Now I can be able to enjoy my HTPC + HD-DVD setup!! Now we're talking baby! UXGA... yep, I got that too! i have the highest rating cable which is more than powerful enough to deliver high res contents.

VGA is viewed as a computer output, so it falls under a different class than component, but I would expect a video card to have to abide by the CE standards for component video (aka 1080i) when outputting component video (e.g., via a dongle). For that matter, computers have other different requirements/limitations than CE devices, as well. However, both ICT and DOT will hold (per nataraj's quote). There's really no free lunch here, while still maintaining AACS compliance.

I don't know about that ... if using just the VGA output to a VGA input on a projector, it is not component. And then can I use powerstrip to get 1080p/24 thr' VGA ?

yep.... Amen.

as matter of fact, I'm currently using my desktop on my plasma @ 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. I was using 1360x768 before. Sometimes I switch it back and forth like my play toy. The graphics is so good and so real, I fall off my own chair.. My cutie toy, i luv it...

Sorry, video card outputting component video, rather than RGBHV.
