hd-dvd up-conversion questions

594 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  cbrboy
I was told a new model toshiba is coming out. If you have a 1080i tv, it supposedly can display the movie at 1080p??? I have one plasma now (50" panasonic plasma) My panasonic does 1080i, but not 1080p.

Would I be better off picking up a cheaper dvd player (non hd-dvd) that can do upconversion to 1080p? Would I be able to tell the difference between upconversion to 1080p and true 1080p on a panasonic plasma?

Thanks

you're never going to be able to see the difference of 1080P when your tv wont display it. :)
hmm, so if I have a 1080i plasma and then purchase a HD-DVD, my TV will never display 1080p? Meaning, I will always be limited to 1080i no matter what DVD player or type of DVD is played?
That's correct. You must have a display capable of displaying 1080p.
Plasmas, lcds, and dlps are all fixed panel displays, they are all progressive. If they are fed an interlaced signal then it will be deinterlaced/scaled to the native resolution of the display. There is no such thing as a 1080i plasma.
Hmm, I'm confused.

The TV I have lists the following under specs:

HDTV Compatibility 1 : 480p/720p/1080i

full details here http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs...s&displayTab=S

(hope that link works)

So you are saying the max for plasma is 720p? I guess I'm confused why people connect dvd players via HDMI cables to their plasmas and claim they get 1080p via up-conversion. (I could be way out in left field with this). Are they really only getting 1080i or 720p?

I'm just trying to find the best dvd player for my tv (panasonic 50" plasma)

Thanks

Your plasma's native resolution is 1366x768 (ie 768p). It will accept 480p/720p/1080i signals. Any signal it receives will be deinterlaced and/or scaled to 768p. Similar to opening up a 1600x1200 JPG image on your pc and stretching it down to 1024x768 (or a 640x480 image and stretching it up to 1024x768).

gotcha, so in that case, I really don't even need a HD-DVD player then since my TV won't support a lot of the formats it has to offer.

So my only real choice when choosing a dvd player, is that it can do 720p, because this is the only format I can do on my plasma

One last question though, would I get a better picture with a dvd player that upconverts to 1080i??? Such as this samsung:

Or is it not worth it since I can only do 720p???

thanks again

Depends on the player. There are good upconverting units and bad ones. Just like there are good lawyers and bad lawyers.

That isn't necessarily true. I was somewhat interested in HD-DVD and wanted to replace my old player with an upconverting one (my old player only has composite and S-Video!), so I went with the A1. I use it on my 720p Sanyo PLV-Z2 projector (the player is set to 1080i, my projector scales it down to 720p), and it looks phenomenal! SD DVDs upconverted look great, but HD-DVDs are incredible!

The moral of my story is that 1080p content (as on HD-DVDs) downconverted to 720p looks much better than 480p (as on SD DVDs) upconverted to 720p. If I were you, I'd go with the A1. Even though you're limited to 720p, as I am, you'll be able to tell the difference in PQ with HD-DVDs.
will do, thanks for all the advice guys
Hi cbrboy,

The HD DVD player will look very good on that display.

My LCD also has 1366 x 768 resolution. I just feed it the 1080i signal from the A1 and it deinterlaces it to 1080p internally, then scales it down to 1366 x 768 progressive.

The picture is still stunning - the best that your display will be able to display currently.

You will definitely want to use 1080i from the A1, though, since the 720p downconversion on the A1 is not perfect. Your plasma can accept the 1080i, so this is cool.

Here are some pics I took of 1366 x 768 on my Samsung. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&post7550066
