HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

1277 Views 9 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  SportyBry
Hey guys-

Not trying to start anything here, just inquiring.

I just bought an HD-DVD player - a Toshiba XA2. The thing is, I just read a post on another (non-AV) forum where guys were reccomending to steer clear of HD-DVD as "Blu ray has won the format war". They said some major studio announced they were going blu-ray exclusive before the summer and that the "we won" announcement was made low-key at the CES show this year.

Um...is there any truth to this? I figured with the lower priced HD-DVD players appearing that "economies of scale" were kicking in and they were winning any "war"...

Warner announced that it will be blu-ray only after May 2008. That leaves Paramount and Universal as the only HD-DVD studios. You can still get over 500 movies, some of which may take a long time to appear on Blu-ray.

Besides, think of how cheaply you will be able to pick up HD-DVD movies....and the XA2 is a fantastic upscaling player.
Enyoy your new player. Not only do you have a top of a line hd dvd player but you have the best upconverting player of dvd's under a $1000. They are correct in that HD DVD suffered a blow in studio support at CES. This was purely a political decison and was not based on player sales. In fact HD DVD has had more stand alone player sales with their lower player price. It is rumored warner was paid upward of 500 million to betray Toshiba and the dvd forum. That kind of cash far exceeds any profits from hdm disks at least for quite some time. The war is far from over with lower hd dvd player prices and more people having players I'd expect more studio support sooner than later. In the meantime HDDVD has exclusive support of 3 major studios.
Aye , Warner really toss HD DVD for a loop but looks like HD maybe getting the last laugh. I WOULD NOT recommend a Blu Ray player anytime in the next year. They have been rushed to market, nothing is finalized as far as web access,1.1 vs 2.0. Only a few movies with Blu-Jive (web content) out there. Unlike HD where we have had a standard player since 06'-07'

Alot of buggy issues for Blu players from other companies playing new disks, the BP-1300 for example , many complain it can't play PoC:3 or Live Free Die Hard when it came out and they company had to release a patch 1 wk later. Now alot of them can't play 3:10 to Uma,Sunshine, Resident Evil:3 patchs are due in 1 wk (2 wks total since movies came out).... So ya thanks for buying Blu, now please wait 2 wks till we patch your 1.0 player cause the new codes on the disk for the 1.1 players are making the disk unreadable for you player.. Let us know how you like watching the movie you bought today .. but in 2 wks.

Keep your HD, thats what I'm doing cause there won't be any reliable Blu Ray that comes close to the feature we have on our machines for atleast 1-2yrs and at a relatively cheap price of under $200.

Read the following for a better understanding of what's going on....

Wow, I read the title of this thread and then the OP and I can't shake the thought that this is some sort of joke. Forgive me, OP.
You made the right decision. I just picked up my first HD DVD last week. There is alot of spin going on that BR has won the war. This may very well be the end of HD DVD or it may not.

HD DVD could still come out ahead. Right now, there are 404 US titles to choose and nearly 1000 worldwide as HD DVD players are region free. There are 468 for BR.

While BR had a victory if Warner does in fact follow through in May and abandon HD DVD, HD DVD is not dead. Paramount and Universal are still with us. So you will have all the content that has been released plus many more still to come like I am Legend.

Right now is the wrong time to invest in BluRay anyway. After profile 2 comes out for BR and the prices come under $200, it will be time to switch.

Going bluray at this point will only get you a standalone that will not be able to fully use the features of profile 2.0 and unlike HD DVD, they are not upgradeable... unless you have a PS3. But even the PS3 has its disadvantages right now.

So enjoy your player and have fun. Your collection will not really lose much value as long as you don't blow your money on $20 plus HD DVDs. You can also use netflix for now as well.

When the time comes to upgrade, you can get a dual format one like the LG which will be more inline as well.

Since you got the Xa2, you have one of the best upconverters there are. If you read the professional reviews of BR players, you will find that most are not very good at upscaling DVD. This is because BR is incompatible with SD DVD while it is native with HD DVD.

You will actually find that there are at present very few titles on Bluray that cannot be had on HD DVD. But the same cannot be said for Bluray. Also, many titles that are blue ray exclusive in the US like REsident evil 1,2 and 3 are available in Europe with the full english soundtracks with HD DVD because of the licensing agreements over there.

SO ENJOY!

Maybe you could read the forum rules in future?
Thanks for all the info and re-assurance guys. I'm sure I'll be happy with my player when it arrives.

With the larger number of movies available, you'd think HD-DVD would be an easier push for retailers? But then again, I guess not all stores that retail the equipment also sell the software.

Sounds like it's not as "over" as I was lead to believe. Thanks again.
