Our workshop has removed the bonnet and taken a look at the technology used within the casing of the HD-E1 by toshiba. This has revealed some interesting findings in the similarity to the HD-A2 sold in USA. The processor is that of Intel Celeron M900. But, of particular interest is the HD DVD Drive by Toshiba, model SD-E802A, very similar to the xbox360 add on drive model SD-S802A. We believe that these drives are region locked for standard dvd.

Is it possible to make the drive region-free by updating the firmware?


Is the same drive used in the A2 as in the E1?

I read someone tried a region free NTSC DVD and it didn't play properly, making it region free is only half way.

i would also love to know this as i have just bought one.. is it the same quality as the A2? also for upconverting does it use the same Reon chip?

The Reon chip is in the XA2 and probably also the XE2 -- not the entry level players.

Dunno for the A2, but it's "more than cousin" E1 here in europe, perfectly read NTSC DVDs (assuming they are not region locked)...

dvdlibra if you can solve the SD region hack I know at least 100 people here in Australia and in Great Britain who'll all chip in and buy you a nice present!
