HD on Mits RPTV w/Intel Graphics: Am I hosed?

336 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  pdiprete
So I thought I was all smart and bought the Intel D945GNTLR MoBo, since it had integrated graphics (GMA950) supporting 1080i. I don't care about gaming, as this is my HTPC only.

After installing Windows XP MCE, updating drivers, trying to create a custom resolution in Powerstrip (disabled for Integrated Graphics Controllers, acc'd to Rick), I feel that I might die stuck at 640x480p. 640x480p works fine, and the system is just loafing along, but I want HiDef (like I had before with my DTC-100.

The set is a Mitsubishi WT-46805 RPTV (CRT). Yeah, it's got the red push that all Mits have, but it's a good set, and it's my Home Theater Display. I am connected to it using the VGA port and an R/G/B/H/V cable.

Can anyone point me to a .inf file that will enable me to set 1920x1080i? 960x540p?

Someone published a ps_mon.inf a while back, but it didn't help.

Hoping someone has the solution...

Cheers and thanks in advance,

Try going to Display settings-Advanced-Adapter-List All Modes. You should be able to select 1920x1080 there, but your going to have overscan.

Have you tried updating the drivers through Intel.com?
There is a 1920x1080, but it's (or appears to be) Progressive. My TV won't sync to anything higher than the 640x480(p) screen resolutions, which is why I believe the 1080 (vertical) resolutions displayed are progressive. I don't know how to get an interlaced resolution in that list. Or a 1920x540 resolution choice.

Sadly, I'm running the latest drivers. :( I also followed Intel's advice to make sure that a driver was installed for the monitor. It seems that using a Plug and Play monitor skips the Graphics driver load.
Many users are having no trouble with the onboard Intel 950 graphics receiveing and displaying HDTV using 1080i programs. Just make sure that you are sending to your TV a resolution that it says it will accept over VGA. Your TV probably will not accepd RGB component from a VGA-RGB adapter. Its component interface is probably desinged for YPrPb component instead. For about $30 you can get a PCI card that will enable you to have a DVI interface to your TV that will use the 950 graphics. This would be less expensive than a VGA to YPrPb component adapter.

Walford, thanks for that. The TV is an RGB TV, and it works just fine at 640x480 right off the VGA port through a VGA->R/G/B/H/V cable. Problem is finding a resolution above 480(vertical) that it will sync with.

How does one get additional resolutions into the list that Windows presents in Display Properties? I can't use PowerStrip's custom resolutions, because it's an Integrated Graphics Controller, which PStrip does not (fully) support. :(

With my 950 graphics. If I right click on a blank space on my desktop and then go to properties/settings/advanced I get to all of the options available with the Intel graphics then select the intel graphics tab and graphic settings.

Walford, thanks! Do you see any that are NNNx540? My list, even when I "show all available" shows only 640x480, then 800x600, ... Since I can't sync at 600 lines, I'm hosed.

The board is capable of the resolution, but since PStrip won't allow Custom Resolutions on that board, and synce the driver does not (apparently) reveal them to mere Windows Mortals, I'm stuck (for the time being) at 640x480. :(

Anyone?
I don't know what the manual for your TV says it will accept over RBG. You might try 1280x720 without using Pstrip since that is a very common HDTV resolution. I didn't see 1080i as an option. Unless your CRT TV is capable of scanning 1080 lines and has 9" guns I suspect that 1280x720 might do just fine.
Walford, thanks for the suggestion.

The set will not do 720p. 1080i is actually 2 540p fields interlaced into 1 1080 frame. So 1080i is actually easier on the set than 720p.

The set won't sync to 800x600(p), so it won't sync to anything x720(p). My only hope, it seems, using this MoBo is to get the driver to offer a Somthing x 540 resolution (preferably 1920x540), since PowerStrip is useless on this MoBo in trying to create the custom resolutions. :(
