I caught the first Final Fantasy movie a few nights ago on TV, and it got me wondering if/how animations & cgi movies could/would be adapted to HD formats?

I know we can get improved picture quality out of the higher bitrate MPEG-2 and/or higher efficiencies of VC-1 / AVC that BD/HD DVD provides over SD DVD.. i.e. less compression artifacts.

And sound quality can be potentially improved.

But will the change from SD to HD be as dramatic for animations/cgi (compared to film content going from SD to HD)? At what resolution were movies like Lion King, Ice Age, Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Final Fantasy, etc. originally rendered? Are the masters a (much) higher resolution than either the theater or SD DVD versions?
