I have basic cable service with my time warner internet access package, in manhattan. it basically gives me local channels (major networks) and public access. i currently have an SDTV.


The question: If i hook up my cable line to an hdtv, will i pick up hd signals on the channels that offer hd, like abc, or do i have to buy/subscribe to an upgraded service?


Basically, can any hi def signal be picked up just by plugging a basic cable line into an hdtv (assuming the tv has a built in tuner of course)?

If you have a QAM tuner, yes. However, unless you truly subscribe to basic cable service, you are stealing their signal and can be prosecuted.

You may or may not be able to. As HDTVFanAtic said, you do need the QAM receiver (many TVs only have ATSC), but the cable company needs to be sending the HD channels unencrypted on basic service. Comcast seems to be doing that nationally but I don't know about TW.
