I am looking into some outreach activities for an organization I am in. One of the possibilities we thought of was contributing - both in ideas and money - to production of some science-oriented programs. I was particularly interested in an HD production, but I have no idea of the typical costs. Could anyone throw out some very general numbers to give me an idea? This could be PBS or Discovery or ....

I would estimate about $1K a minute for the final product in SDTV, maybe mark it up about another 1/3 for HDTV. So, maybe $80,000 for a one-hour documentary style show. Much more if you have to pay talent costs, sets/location costs, etc.

Maybe a little off topic, but what about sports programming?

For instance TSNHD has only chosen to produce a few CFL games in HD so far. They obviously have the equipment, so i'm assuming the reason for not doing more is related to the cost.

How much additionaly cost is involved over a SD production?

Thanks for the estimate, Ken. I guess this is where the big foundations come in. I think we could eventually do something but it will take a good sales pitch and some sample efforts, which I have some ideas on.
