HD programming with SD commercials...audio goes super loud

359 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Stereodude
I have a 5.1 setup with a Yamaha HTR-5860 receiver, and the audio I get with SD programming is much louder than with HD programming. This means that when I'm watching an HD program and I put it around -20 to get it to a decent listening level, as soon as an SD commercial comes on the sound is just ear-popping, wake up the people down the street loud.

I imagine this has to do with it switching the kind of decoding its doing as the SD programming is no longer passing DD sound, but how do I deal with this? Couldn't really find much in the manual about it but then again this manual is far from intuitive.

If it weren't for the DVR that let me skip all commercials, I think this would drive me nuts.
Under the audio menu on the Yamaha, there should be a setting for Dynamic Range. If you set it to Min there should only be a 3db change in volume then. Of course you won't be getting the dynamics on the shows that you should have, but perhaps that is better than loud commericials.
Arg...well that's annoying. I'd hate to sacrifice sound quality for this.
I have the same problem, and I use the HK 635. However, I don't notice it if I switch between SD and HD, just when I am watching ESPN HD and they show a SD commercial. Other than that one case, I seem to be OK. I think it has something to do with the broadcast signal, and is not all processor related, or it would show up in lots of situations. For instance, it doesn't happen with watching a local station (ABC, NBC, etc) HD program via cable. And you know not all of those commercials are in HD.
I think it's the problem of your local TV station. Call and complain.
