Broadcasters continue to make the transition to digital broadcasts using HD Radio technology. The HD Digital Radio Alliance, a joint initiative of the nation's largest broadcasters announced Monday that stations in another 17 markets will go live with HD Radio by the end of the month.

The expansion, in markets ranked No. 66 to No. 85 such as Grand Rapids, Mich.; Omaha, Neb.; and Toledo, Ohio, bring the total number of markets where HD Radio is available to more than 600 radio stations in 85 markets, all in the top 100. More than half of those stations offer HD 2 side channels.

In a separate release, Clear Channel Radio announced it added HD2 side channels to stations in 15 markets, for a total of 320 stations in 81 markets offering multicasts.

By making the transition and offering HD2 side channels, broadcasters are betting that consumers will purchase new HD Radio receivers, currently available by more than 18 companies in thousands of store locations nationwide and online. How many consumers have purchased receivers is unclear.

To urge consumer adoption, broadcasters have earmarked $250 million in airtime to partner with retailers, manufacturers and other partners in promoting HD Radio.
