I am needing a third receiver and am thinking strongly about getting the HD-TIVO deal for $299. Now my question is concerning my current Sony HD Receiver. I only have one HD TV set. Will the Sony HD receiver work with my non HD TV in the B/R? Right now I have a regular directv receiver connected via composite cables (red/white for audio and yellow for video). The main thing I do not want my picture quality to go down on the B/R TV.

At some point I will get an HD TV for the B/R, but cannot do it now.

Another thing is how is the PQ with the TIVO versus the Sony HD receiver?

Should work fine, the Sony should output 480i via the composite connections, of course since you have the receiver already, you could try it out.

I thought of trying it out, but it is in a cabinet and hard to get in and out. The main reason is we are moving into a new house in about 2 months and did not want to wait for the new receiver to long.

Double check the manual, it should be available at Directv.com, I'm pretty sure it'll do what you want though.
