It depends on how your set handles 720p signals. Most convert to 1080i, other downconvert to 480p, a few simply can't do anything with it.

Usually the STB (set-top-box) is used to convert the incoming source to the format the set wants to see.

Hello,

Many Panasonic TVs, mine included, will only accept 480i/p and 1080i. My cable box and Panasonic OTA HD box presents the choice of passing the signal in a "hybrid mode" were 480i/p and 1080i are passed natively and 720p is upconverted to 1080i or in a "fixed mode" where everything is upconverted to 1080i.

What make and model TV do you have? Are you sure you don't mean that it will only accept a 1080i HD signal via component or DVI which may be quite different from the actual resolution(s) it can displays at? Thne situation Paul describes is very common with vendors sets.

You have answered your own question. If your tv is only capable of displaying @ 1080i then it is scaling all input to this resoloution.

This seems unlikely. What is the make and model of this TV???

The specs on your NTSC tuner equipped CRT Tv state that it will display up to 800 lines. It also appears that the only HD video signal it will accept from a separate HD receiver is 1080i. Therefor you have to set the output from your OTA receiver, HD cable STB or HD satellite unit to 1080i. One resolution it actually displays from the 1080i signal is hard to determine since the specs state up to 800 lines and not 1080.

Most HD CRTs have a dotpitch limitation that limits display to about 800 horizontal resolution. The CRT is fed with a 1080 signal but the pixels will overlap a bit reducing the viewable resolution. Only the new Sony super-fine-pitch HD CRTs have higher resolution, about 1400 horizontal.

My fairly old Loewe Aconda 30-inch only takes 1080i as well. Not a problem; every set-top box I've had will convert.

The native resolution is about 800x600. But it's a pretty picture.
