What are they smoking? Save $200.04 from retail at $1999.99??? MSPR is $999!

Come on, even Good Guys have 10% discount for pre-oreder (with 50% non-refundable down payment, I heard). And Value Electronics has $100 discount (with $100 down).

The spec sheet above must be old since the announced design will have four tuners (2 ATSC and 2 D* HD). Now, what stretch modes does this puppy have and how will it compare to those of the LG/Sony/Zenith which are probably the best out there.
Hey Ken - the fine print over on the left says (Split internally to 2 ATSC tuners). Is there somewhere else that says it only has 1? I am pretty sure it has two.
I think you meant they are saying $1199 MRSP, with $200 off to get to $999.

This is obviously a pathetic lie and is clear indication that OrbitSat is dishonest. Stay away from them.

I tried to send them an email via their contact page but when I hit submit it gives me an error. So no way even to point out their "error."

It has four tuners, but you can only use two of them at one time, so effectively it is a dual tuner device.

Ok OK I pre-ordered mine (Value Eletronics), and I am sure it will be great and all, but my God is it ugly. Would it kill hughes to design a box that I won't be embarrased to have in my living room? now I have to put it in a closet and set up an IR repeater.
I think it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. ( apologies to Jurassic Park for ripping off their line )

Jeff
I love all my A/V equipement regardless of thier brands, their manufacturing locations, or their colors. :p

Hong.
it says pause live tv up to 30 minutes. does that include HD? (reason I ask is that I heard the 921 could only pause HD for 15 minutes because of the size needed to buffer the HD)

Also, if it has 4 tuners (of which 2 can be used at a time) can't I record 2 shows at once and then watch a previously viewed one at the same time? The blurb in the sheet implies you can't.
rumor has it you can record two and watch a third.
Since this is a Hughes design and not an LG piece, can anyone familiar with previous Hughes STBs comment on their stretch modes? Most people really like the "Panaroma" mode of the LG/Sony/Zenith clones and I'm wondering if the Hughes has something like that (a non-linear stretch).
Unfortunately, only a linear stretch is available. Here's the official word on aspect ratio control, courtesy of TiVoPony:

Quote:
If you have a 4:3 HDTV, and the content is 16:9, the recorder will letterbox the content to create a 4:3 signal (assuming that you've told the recorder that you have a 4:3 tv).

The inverse is also true...4:3 content on a 16:9 tv can be sidepaneled to create a 16:9 signal.

The alternative, if you don't want letterboxing/sidepaneling, is for the recorder to stretch the signal to match the required aspect ratio. You can alternate between stretched and paneled with the window button on the remote, or via the setup menus.

I know I've answered this before, but no, there are no zoom or crop modes, only stretch/panel. The stretch/panel option works vertically for 16:9 content on a 4:3 TV, and horizontally for 4:3 content on a 16:9 TV.

We can look at adding more modes down the road, as all of these systems are software upgradeable. But on day one only stretch/panel will be available.

I'm hoping that native resolution out can be software-upgraded some day!

That's really ashame. I've come to enjoy the stretch modes on my Sony HD200. Bummer. You would think at this late date, everyone would automatically throw a non-linear stretch mode in.
mdryja,

what is the story on the native output??

I dont remember seeing anything on that..................

Exactly what I have been thinking ever since D* announced they were doing away with multiple branding on D* compatible receivers. I have E*, and one of the things I've always hated is the way this damn 6000 looks. For a grand you'd think they could at least put a flat aluminum faceplate on it (the HD DirecTivo). I was looking fwd to waiting and getting another brand (Switch to D*, get a Sony, Samsung, etc); now I guess I'll just wait till the D* branded versions come out and see if they look any better. A $50 DVD player from Costco looks 10 times better than almost all of these Hughes and E* sat boxes. I was beginning to think I was the only one who noticed:D

I don't like silver, I like black to blend into the background not stand out.
I am curious to see if you will be able to add more hard drive space via the USB ports. It will probably become part of the future "software upgrades". Additional drive space would be nice for those who like to archive.
