I am planning to upgrade the hard drive in a 5040. I was wondering if the speed of the harddrive (5400 or 7200 RPM) and cache size (2MB or 8MB) would have any noticeable different in response time when moving through Replay Guide information and playing a show.

Does anyone know what speed and cache size is in the unit from the factory?

Thanks - Adrian

OEM disc is 5400 2MB cache.

I personally did notice an improvement in response time browsing the replay guide, and possibly the channel guide when I upgraded to a 7200 8MB drive.

However, there has been considerable debate on this topic in the past (seach for "response time" and "cache", and you should find some of these threads).

The question might be ... how much add'l are you paying for 7200 RPM 8mb vs. 5400 2mb? If you hunt around for the best price, you may not really pay anything extra at all, in which case you should get the faster disc.

Yes, yes, yes.

Speed was an big issue in the 3k line which didn't have a fan. Since then it's been a moot point.

and you'll get answers to the cache and other issues.
