HD via Comcast without QAM?

889 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  JasG
I just bought a Samsung T220HD for my computer, but also as a TV. It says online it has NTSC/ATSC(DTV) tuners in it. I have it hooked up through a coaxial cable to comcast, in detroit, and I haven't been able to get any HD over-the-air or through cable. I understand that apparently comcast passes HD channels through QAM rather than ATSC or whatever, but why can't I get them over-the-air either? I've tried all the subchannels in the detroit, MI thread, and I get nothing. Auto-program doesn't show me any DTV channels anywhere, either.

Is there a cheap solution to get some HD channels? Is there any cheap pass-through converter to let my TV see QAM channels?

Edit: I have, in other rooms of my house, cable boxes supplying HD channels to other TV's, but I'm not terribly interested in paying monthly for a third comcast STB

Over-the-Air (OTA) is associated with using an ATSC tuner and antenna to receive local digital broadcast channels.

Cable systems do not use ATSC as a transmission method, they use QAM.

No to 'cheap', but Several of the tuners listed in the thread titled 'The Official AVS HDTV STB Synopsis' (above) are both ATSC/QAM tuners, but probably more than you'll want to spend.
