I'm new to HTPCs. I have a specific question: Is the audio and/or video quality of a DVD/ blu-ray BETTER when ripped and played from a HD vs. that same DVD/blu-ray played from the computer's blu-ray drive? CDs ripped and played from my computer's HD sound immensely better than played from the blu-ray drive. thanks.

Nope.

They shouldn't, sounds like your CD player isn't using Digital Audio Extraction.
