On page 18 of the manual for the Panasonic HD1000, there is the following statement:

"This D-VHS VCR can play back tapes with copy protection. However, the TU-DST50 Set Top Box is not compatible with copyrighted programs. To watch copyrighted programs, a compatible Set Top Box is necessary."

So does this mean that if any hi-def movies are released (legally) on D-VHS that they will not be playable on the HD1000/DST50 combination? What about the DST51? What other options are there?

just to expand on the topic - I've got recently a lot of used DVHS tapes which where recorded on older JVC DVHS Dish Network unit (to the best of my knowledge). I've tried to play back couple of them on PV-HD1000 through TU-DST51 and the screen is black. On VCRs there are two letters "CP" coming out. Is that "copy protected" :( ???
