HD200 first day problems

546 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Mfusick
I took my first plunge into HD on Saturday, when I went to CC and purchased a Sony 34XBR800 direct view, HD200 STB and NS715P DVD player.

I replaced my old 18" round dish with a 3 LNB dish and installed the HD200 STB today. Signal strengths on all 3 sats are 86-88. At the moment, the display is a 5 year old RCA analog, but the 34XBR800 will be delivered on Thursday.

The installation went smoothly, but there are two glitches that I could use some help with. I've read quite a few threads about the HD200, but I haven't seen any references to these problems.

The first problem is that the channel +/- button on the remote does not change the channel. Pushing either + or - on this button makes the screen go dark for a moment and then it comes back with the same station displayed. If I display the guide, the same button will page through the guide, as it is supposed to do. As far as I can tell, every other way of changing the channel works.

The second problem is mainly visible with OTA signals. With the HD200 in standby mode, the PQ of a station with a strong signal is fantastic; very clear, no flicker. If I activate the HD200 and tune to the same chanel, the PQ is much worse, with ripples and venetian blind effects rolling up the screen. When I tune to a SD sat signals, the PQ is initially similar, but after 30-60 seconds, they usually stabilize and become much better. Usually, but not 100%. Sometime the PQ does not improve.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Make sure the CUSTOM guide has not been set up so that only one channel (or no channels) is displayed. My experience is that the channels you set to "Display" on the CUSTOM guide are the only ones that the + and - keys will access. The ALL guide will still display everything when you access that, but change to CUSTOM and see what shows. If you use the Auto Program feature it should load everything into the Custom guide and then you will have to delete all the channels you never watch.
Thanks cdharris, the 'Custom Guide' was exactly the problem with the channel +/- button. Now I just have to hide all those useless channels.

Any ideas about the OTA PQ problem?
OK, if I'm being a baby about this, just let me know. I use an antenna rotator to pull in distant OTA channels from the E, SE, S, and SW. If I do an auto scan, I only get the stations that are in the direction the antenna is pointed during the scan. Scanning in different directions yields different channel lists. I can add analog stations by turning the antenna to a new direction and manually adding the stations in that direction. I can't figure out how to manually add digital stations because the manual station add function doesn't accept a "." in the channel number. Any suggestions?

When you manually add a station, it automatically scans analog OTA, cable, and digital OTA for that particular number.

When you want to add a digital station, you need to scan its actual broadcast number, not it's remap. E.g., if you want to add 4.1 and it happens to be broadcast on ch. 48, then you need to scan 48, not 4.

You said your using an AMP right?

perhaps this is the problem?

Is the wires and the amp and splitters and things high enough bandwidth for the digital tuner?

Perhaps the Digital tuner has problems the lesser and older RCA tuner does not notice?

Just a thought. That's where I would start.

perhaps try to get some old rabbit ears or indoor ant and try it into the SATHD200 OTA in...

See if the problem is with the Sony HD200 or the Antenna. Then you can look further in the direction of the problem.

joealtus: Thanks for the info. I'll give that a try tonight.

Mjusick: Good idea. My first step will be to bypass the amp. The problem may be with the RCA analog, and I'll find out about that on Thrusday when the XBR arrives.

Thanks for the suggestions.

RCA cables could be the cause, particuarly if your sending high quality high bandwidth signal and they are the el cheapo type that comes with things.

That would be a welcomed problem...Since the solution is easy.

I think when you hook that DVI cable up, from the HD200 to the 34XBR800, you should be ok, or else it's the HD200 or the antenna and cable system.

You said it does it on DirectTv too?

That would make me think it could be the RCA's, or the HD200.
