Where are you going to get a 3D BD to rip?

It's also not clear if there will be any tools to allow you to rip a 3D BD, or only the 2D core this is also on the same disc.

Currently there are no PC products that claim to be able to play Full 3D BR disks and/or the content to a new 3D display or TV using HDMI 1.4 packed format or any other format

hopefully, somebody will make a player for the PC that can take advantage of 3D Blu Ray's. I think it might be the only way I will be able to watch 3D Blu Ray's on my Samsung plasma. I could set the computer to output Checkerboard at 1360 x 768, and it should work fine.

That would be a tall order; a player, a down scaler and a format converter.

And that order will be filled soon.

I think eventually, somebody will make a software player that can do it. I might need a pretty strong PC for it to work, but I think eventually there will be a software based 3D player that will work, as long as you have a Blu Ray drive in your PC.

I understand the PowerDVD 10 Ultra to be releaased later this spring will support the playing of FullHD 3D BR disks. And it appears that that coupled with the Nvidia anouncment about FullHD 3D BR driver support may provide the ability to have packed 1080p/24 content available by summer or fall to be sent to the new 3D TVs.

I would be surprised if Stereoscopic Player isn't eventually updated to support 3D Blu-ray playback. It currently supports all of the different SD stereoscopic flavors of which I am aware (including field sequential and SENSIO).

Do any of these proposed software packages allow downscaling and format conversion? Or are they just making a PC into a 3D BD player?

Stereoscopic Player can do format conversion on the fly (although it can't convert from anaglyph, it can convert to anaglyph from other formats).

It also supports whatever output resolution your display (or more specifically, your graphics card) supports.

The above is true for SD 3D. I would just be guessing as to what its capabilities with 3D Blu-ray may or may not be.

If the first release of the Nvidia 3D TV player does not support additional formats I suspect the follow on releases will.

Arcsoft is implementing 3D BD support into TMT, and it'll include checkerboard output.

What i gather from all of you great people. I'm gonna have to wait like the rest of you. For somebody to release a program that makes it easy to watch 3d movies on a projector...

Well I refuse to watch avitar Unless it's in 3D... So they need to make a simple a way for us to enjoy 3d in our homes.. We have 3d bluray players that seem to only work with a hand full of products. we have 3d projectors that can't work with a 3dsource...

Why are they rushing to release 3d to the open market when the average customer won't have a clue why they spent 2 or 3k on a 3d tv and bluray player that refuse to play anything in 3d...

Walford, I assume they mean the Optoma HD66.

I was watching 720p 3d movie clips on my projector via the pc, and I believe I had a 1080P 3d clip of something, as well as some divx quality, and some 576p, they all played perfect, scaled to 720p.

My impression after playing with Nvidia 3d Vision, and the HD66 is that it will play Bluray 3d movies scaled to 720p no problem as long as you meet the minimum requirements for Nvidia 3d Vision (8600gt video or better - they are like 25 bucks online now) Other than that, it should be no problem. Converting a framepack bluray to 120hz cant begin to compare with playing modern games up high, if a TV can convert framepacked to a regular 120hz signal, than for sure the PC is capable of doing it without hesitation.

The PC I tested on is:

5400 AMD

4 Gig Memory

8600GT(And then an 8800gt - both did fine)

The 8600GT worked fine, and then I bought a 8800GT PNY for like 40 bucks on ebay, and it did great too, even for gaming.

For the person who has checkerboard - the companies that release DLP tvs (not projectors) that are 3d ready are making a converter box that will convert 3d Bluray Frame Packed to Checkerboard. Prices are supposed to be around 100 bucks. I contacted Optoma with some questions regarding the HD66, if a converter will be available, and about checkerboard support. Well see in a day or two.

David.
From Mitsubishi:

Lee:

When the Mitsubishi 3DC-1000 is converting a 3D source signal to the Checkerboard 3D signal as required by a Mitsubishi 3D DLP Home Cinema TV, the output signal is always 1920 x 1080 @ 60p Checkerboard 3D format. When the 3DC-1000 is receiving a 2D signal, it passes the signal through unaltered as long as that signal is compatible with our TV.

Nick
