I have now and Optoma HD72 PJ. I am looking at getting a PS3. Will I only be able to get a 480p picture being my PJ is a 768 or 720 PJ? I am sorry but I guess I don't fully understand what is being said in different posts about this subject.

Thanks

Josh

The HD72 accepts a 1080i and scales it to it's native resolution which depends whether or not you have it set to 1280x768 (16:10) or 1280x720 (16x9).

I have my HD72 set to 1280x720 (16:9) and I'm feeding it a 1080i signal from all of my HD sources. You'll be fine feeding the HD72 a 1080i signal from the PS3.

I have the HD72 and a PS3. I have the PS3 set to 1080i (although the HD72 will take a 1080p signal).

The projector does a pretty good job scaling it down. No worries.

I'm confused about the HD70 and the PS3, both of which I am considering buying (primarily for Blu-Ray movies). I keep reading that because the PS3 will not output a 720p signal, that people are choosing to output the 1080i and to have the projector downscale it to 720p. Since the PS3 can also output 1080p, which I think the HD70 can downscale to 720p, why would you not choose to output the 1080p from the PS3? I am also wondering if I am going to get the same image quality for BLu-Ray movies from the PS3 as I would get from a dedicated Blu-Ray player.

That will work just fine. The only reason you usually see people talking about 1080i scaling to 720p is that the majority of 720p native devices don't support 1080p. If your display device supports it, use it!

Yep, choose 1080p for the PS3. I am not sure, but I think the HD70 may be downconverting 1080i to 540p before scaling to 720p. The reason I believe this is because when you select "native" mode when playing 1080i, you see the video in a small window in the middle of the screen. This is supposed to be a test of whether it's deinterlacing properly. So, in case it is not correctly deinterlacing, set the PS3 to 1080p.

The funny thing is that I can't really see a difference in sharpness with HD DVDs at 1080i and BDs at 1080p (granted, I'm comparing different titles). Neither format looks superior to the other, so maybe the projector IS deinterlacing properly.
