Hi

I have managed to get an hdd200 hooked up to my

4DTV receiver with YpYr component output to my

Panasonic 42" Plasma.

My problem - The HBO High def stuff comes in fine

but a lot of it is in 4x3 which I don't care for.

The plasma remote control won't let me change

aspect ratio in component input mode.

The manual for the hdd200 shows a method for

getting a menu display from the hdd200 itself to change

aspect ration but I can't get the display to come up.

Has anyone else run across this problem ?

If I can't get this figured out (I'm still convinced it's

operator error) I may return it.

Thanks for any help !

You've got to change the output on the HD200. If it's set to 1080i or 720p, you're upscaling any 480 signal, the panel sees it as full screen, meaning it won't allow you to change the scaling of the image. On the 4x3 stuff, you want that to be output as 480, which should allow the scaling options you are looking for - either through the HD200 options, or those of the panel itself. Not sure, but there may be a "variable" output setting on the HD200 which will change from 1080i or 720p to 480 when the signal changes, so that the scaling options you want to occur may happen more automatically.

Thanks Rich

I'll give it a try but dropping the output to 480

seems to defeat the purpose of the hdd200.

If I have Hi Def coming in wouldn't I want Hi Def (720p)

coming out.

Anytime you are watching a channel whether OTA or cable/sat that's broadcasting a signal that has a 1080i format you will get black bars on the sides when that channel is broadcasting 4x3 programming. If the STB is set to output 1080i format or if it is set to "variable one" it will sense the 1080i format and if 4X3 programing is being broadcast you will be stuck with the bars. Your display will not allow you to stretch the picture.

The easiest way to defeat the black bars is to "force" the HD200 to take the 1080i (or 720P) format it's receiving and output a 480p format to the display. The HD200 makes this eaiser than any other STB. There is a button under the flip top named "format". If you press that button you can take that 1080i format and force it to output at 480p. At that point your display will allow you to stretch the 4x3 program and fill the screen.

Any material being broadcast in in 4X3 format is NOT in HD, so you are not "defeating the purpose of the hd200". Some don't like the stretching of 4X3 material but most newer displays and the HD200 do a very good job of filling the screen without much anamorphic distortion.

DOBE has it-- its called "CROPPED"--only available in 480p when using "Component" or "VGA (15 pin)".
