Can anyone get the menus to work on a backed up HD-DVD using PowerDVD 7.3 ultra?

Have the same problem on 2 or 3 hd dvd's, but for the most part haven't had the problem. So far its been on Superman Returns, and 2 others I can't remember off hand.

I cant see the menus on Tokyo Drift and V for vendetta, all my other movies are on disc so I play them on my HD A1.

On the ones that don't work, it's a matter of editing the XPL file. Some need some heavy editing so good luck.

Why should you need to edit the XPL?

When you back up the disk to a HDD the AACS must be stripped and the menu format on the XPL file is sometimes changed. I have several titles that I had to fix minor syntax errors due to this. Some were so bad that I gave up.

CAn you tell me what I should edit, or is it to complicated? I am a DVD author so I should understand pretty well.

Its not that hard perse, but finding where the error is the harder part. The file is actually a very simple XML file.


If you have a title that the menu does works open up VPLST000.XPL in a text editor (Notepad is my choice) and then open of the VPLST000.XPL in a title that the menu does not work.


Compare them both and find where they are different. Using some trial&error editing you can make the menus work. Its not the same in every disk so I can't tell you "fix this and it will work". But most will work while playing with the different options.


There are some disks that require some heavy editing so make sure you save your original VPLST000.XPL files somewhere safe.

Do you think it's the path of the menus should be cahnged as the path in the .XPL is no longer correct?

I have never changed the path. The only thing I usually change is the subtitles (edit them out) and/or sometimes remove the first-run with (menu, or logos, or previews) and put in the main feature.

I have noticed that AnyDVD really screws with the menus, if that's what you backed up with..
