HDDVD on Infocus 4805

I purchased my HDDVD player the other day, and I'm very impressed so far. I have it connected via HDMI to the M1 adaport on the projector. THe one thing I find interesting, though, is that if I feed the projector 480p it says it's reading 480p, same for 720p. It even says 1080i when showing my HD box over component. However, when feeding 1080i out of the Toshiba to the projector the displays says the signal is "1920x540 50hz". What's the deal with that? Should I change the output to 720p, becuase that is a higher resolution, or is it really reading 1080i and seeing it as 540p? I'm a little confused about this as it's the only source I've encountered this with on my projector that I've owned for 2 years.

Set the output of the Toshiba player to 1080i and don't ever change it. The reason your projector is saying "1920x540 50hz" is because that's the native resolution of the projector so it takes the input from the HD DVD player and down converts it to the resolution the projector is designed to display. Don't use 720p on the HD-A1 as it is broken use 1080i for the best possible picture quality.
Glad to see reports that HD DVD looks great on the 854x480 native Infocus 4805. Be sure to set your gains/offsets in the advanced picture menu to 58/28.5 (leave contrast/brightness at 50/50). Leave the HD DVD player at 1080i.

Some displays process 1080i as 1920x540 depending on how the source sends out 1080i, so what you're seeing should be fine.
Thanks for the input guys, I kind of figured that 540 was just how it read 1080i on this input. I don't think it has anything to do with the native resolution, because that's not the native resolution of the projector.

The picture does look great, HD has alwasy looked much better than DVD even on the ED projector. I'm very happy with the purchase

Ja Phule i to have the 4805 and i agree the picture quality is amazing, i can hardly wait when i updrade to native 720p projector....but that will have to pass the WAF and thats not an easy task :)-
Yup, I've got the A1 on my 4805 as well and the picture has been nothing short of breathtaking. Way better than SD DVD especially the colours and black levels, but I can even make out the resolution increase as well. Everything is just so clear and sharp!
Why should I assign those values to the gain/offset?

The M1/HDMI input on the 4805 defaults to "PC" levels over this input. HDMI and DVI outputs from video players send out "Studio" levels signals. Assuming the Toshiba is sending out the correct "Studio" levels from its hdmi input, setting the 4805 to 58/28.5 gains/offsets should give a good calibrated picture. Setting the 4805 to 58/28.5 gains/offsets will set the 4805's m1/hdmi input to the correct "Studio" level.

I noticed when trying to do this, that there are no ".5" increments on my 4805?
Just found the answer in your FAQ, thanks!
