Can someone tell me how I can play audio files on my HTPC using the Logic 7 surround mode (or any 5.1 surround mode) in the Harman Kardon AVR 354?

In my HTPC I have a 4850 video card which is connected by an HDMI cable to an AVR 354 with the latest software update. Audio and video seems to work except that when I play music on my PC, the 354 only provides 2 channel stereo and Dolby Virtual Surround (2 channel) surround modes. The Logic 7 surround modes are disabled.

Before I updated to the latest 354 software, I did have some limited success in changing the Media Server source to a non-HDMI set up, then changed the Music surround mode to Logic 7, and then changed the audio and video source back to HDMI. I did play Pandora in Logic 7. Now, as soon as I play any audio the 354 switches to multi-channel pcm from Logic 7.

I've reviewed other threads and have tried some other recommendations but I still only get 2.1 sound. I've played my audio files using Winamp, WMP 11, and the latest version of VLC.

Which OS are you using? Windows Vista/7 audio engine always sends 5.1 or 7.1 channel audio streams to the receiver if you select 5.1 or 7.1 speakers in the Control panel so that matrix multichannel audio processing like Logic 7 can't work.

A workaround is use WASAPI exclusive mode in ReClock.

Kernel Streaming mode in XP is an equivalent of WASAPI exclusive mode.

- Winamp Kernel Streaming plugin

- WMP11: ReClock (supporting Kernel Streaming) may work with it.

- VLC: no go.

foobar2000 (a free music player) also supports KS with a plugin.
