HDMI : connecting a laptop, HD TV, Denon home theater

I'm sure this is simple for alot of you out there, but this has been kicking my butt.

I watch TV through my laptop. I have an HDMI cable from laptop to the Cable/sat HDMI on my Denon Receiver.
Then I have HDMI Out (from the Denon) to the Arc 1 on the tv.

When I'm watching tv, the sound is put out by my surround speakers, which is good. If I'm watching my smart TV, then the sound is coming through my tv and not through the surround speakers. Any help to get the tv sound to come from the surround speakers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

"When I'm watching tv," or "watching my smart TV" ???

I'm guessing you are using the ARC port on the Denon? HDMI Output 1, then when watching an app that is running on the TV, the TV should have an ARC setting you turn on and that will use the TVs ARC port to the Denons HDMI 1 ARC port. You also have to set the Denon to "TV Audio".
What's the model # of the Denon AVR? Is ARC enabled on both the Denon and the TV?
Denon AVR-S540BT.
Denon AVR-S540BT.
I dont see anything on the screen labeled ARC.

Hi, please bear with me. Ok, HDMI from laptop to CABLE/SAT on Denon. Then, there's another HDMI going from HDMI OUT (DENON) to ARC 1 ON BACK OF TV. For me to use laptop, using TV remote i see HDMI 1,2,3. When I select HDMI 1, the sound comes out of my surround sound speakers of the Denon. Using the Denon remote and the TV remote i dont see anything listed as ARC. I tried using HDMI 2 & 3, but it states there's no connection. When I click on a TV app on the TV, the sound plays through the TV speakers.

You have to tell the AVR that you want to get audio from the ARC on HDMI output port 1 and not from any of the regular HDMI inputs.
Check page 79 of the denon manual.

Check page 79 of the denon manual.
This is so damn confusing. Im ready to drop an anvil on the whole mess. I turned the hdmi tv audio on, nothing. Reading the manual hasn't helped me. This is ********.

What kind of tv? Does it even have ARC? The HDMI port on the Denon and the tv will be listed as ARC capable in the manual as well at the port. You need to connect the two ports directly as shown on page 79 of the Denon manual. It could also be a CEC issue. On older systems ARC/CEC are on the same chipset so you have to either both on or both off, and if there is a CEC incompatibility, that could affect ARC.

Using a laptop as your source can have its own set of issues.
ARC defaults to "off" on the receiver (as described in the manual). Did you change it to "on"?
Sometimes it can be confusing between reading and understanding a manual. ;)

As far as we know (so far).... it's probable. :)

Ok, under Denon video, ARC is on. Still only TV speakers are audible.
Ok. So both the tv and the Denon are ARC capable. If it works as you want with the tv remote but not the Denon remote, then that does sound like a CEC issue (correct source input not found).
Let's try to get on the same level.

I watch TV through my laptop. I have an HDMI cable from laptop to the Cable/sat HDMI on my Denon Receiver.
Then I have HDMI Out (from the Denon) to the Arc 1 on the tv.
So... audio works as expected. Video is on the TV.
All good. Correct?

"Watching TV" means you're using the laptop as the source for "TV".
All good for audio/video. Correct?

If I'm watching my smart TV, then the sound is coming through my tv and not through the surround speakers. Any help to get the tv sound to come from the surround speakers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Now.... if you use the Smart Apps in/from the TV to the AVR, you have issues with audio.
Correct?
If yes: Check the audio/HDMI settings in the TV (and perhaps the Smart Apps).

Also, do you get "no sound" from the AVR at all or is it just that only the "surround speakers" in the AVR which aren't producing sound as anticipated?

And... please provide the make/model of your TV. ;)

I'll get that info to you tonight when I get home.
